Bio
Ernst Falkbeer was an Austrian chess master and journalist known for introducing the Falkbeer Countergambit. It’s a line in the King’s Gambit that begins 1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5. Note that Falkbeer was a strong player in addition to his chess theory contributions and work as a chess columnist. In fact, he played two matches with Henry Bird, and they split the results. Falkbeer later beat Pierre de Saint-Amant in a top knockout tournament before finishing in second place.
