2019.

FM Viktor Neustroev decided to play in the Moscow Open, one of the biggest tournaments in Russia. Viktor was not playing well in the Sub 2300 category, with many draws. In the fifth round, Viktor faced a prodigy player, who played a suspect variant with Bc5 and Qb6 in the Sicilian. So, the variant he played this one, and during the preparation, he had some doubts about what to do:

The general feeling is that this was wrong. Developing the Queen too early is a breach of the opening rules. But how to punish it? Playing with 6.Nc3 is possible, but after 6...Nc6 Black manages to have some initiative.

How to play after 5...Qb6? Viktor didn't exactly know at the time, which is why I decided to call IM David Fitzsimons. (Joke, as this Masterclass wasn't ready yet!) In fact, he called another strong chess player to see if he knows this position. He told me that 6.Na3! it is a promising option, and he had some analysis of the following lines to define how to obtain favorable positions.

So 5...Qb6 was kind of a trap waiting for a common 6.Nc3 reaction. But with 6.Na3!, Black has some problems and can end up falling into traps. The game ended in 11 moves. It was the shortest victory for FM Viktor Neustroev! Want to know how the game went on? Attend IM David Fitzsimons' Opening Trap Masterclass. You may say that you don't play traps and hoping for your opponent to get trapped isn't the best way to play chess for advanced club players and professionals. I agree with you, but you should know traps, at least not to get trapped yourself!

In 24 hours, IM David Fitzsimons will be live showing all the openings that have hidden traps, both white and black.

The Masterclass consists of 2 separate 2 hours LIVE sessions.

When?

Saturday, May 27 | 11:00 a.m. EST (New York Time Zone)
Sunday, May 28 | 11:00 a.m. EST (New York Time Zone)

Even if you can't attend a session, we'll send you the recordings and the PGNs. Don't miss your chance to improve your ability to play the openings and defeat your opponents quickly!
