What is depression? Depression is serious medical mental illness that causes persistent sadness, emptiness, or loss of interest in activities. Depression is not just a mere state of sadness. It is not a sign of weakness or a condition that can be "snapped out of".

Common affects are headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, abnormal heart palpitations, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, stress, difficulty focusing, difficulty sleeping, difficulty breathing, difficulty eliminating wastes, low energy, reduce appetite, decreased motivation, decreased libido, decrease tolerance, intrusive thoughts, suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self harm, confusion, indifference to loved ones, trouble reasoning, trouble validating feelings of self and others, feelings of hopelessness high feelings of sadness and distress, unbalanced hormones, hypertension, heart failure, stroke, seizure, forgetfulness, dementia, muscle atrophy, brain atrophy, cognitive deterioration, and physical pain.

Depression is highly individualized and varies significantly between people, presenting differently based on personal circumstances. While persistent sadness is common, others may experience anger, irritability, physical pain, or emotional numbness instead of, or in addition to, low mood.
