Play Like A World Champion: Fischer and Karpov

In 1972 Bobby Fischer broke the Soviet control of the World Championship by winning the "Match of the Century" against Boris Spassky. However, in 1975 Fischer refused to defend his title and another great champion, Anatoly Karpov ascended to the throne!

There was tremendous excitement when Fischer and Spassky faced off in Iceland in 1972. Fischer blundered in game one and failed to show up in game two, but then came back and won the match 12.5-8.5.

Karpov vs Korchnoi 1978

In 1975 Fischer refused to defend his title against Anatoly Karpov, who then became champion. Karpov's first title defense came against Viktor Korchnoi, a veteran player.

Karpov vs Korchnoi 1981

In 1981 Korchnoi earned another match with Karpov. However, this time the champion was much too strong. Karpov decisively retained his title 6-2 with ten draws.
