Canada vs America

Submitted by Akuni on Sat, 02/07/2009 at 9:14pm.

Canada and America have competed in every conceivable type of event. In hockey Canada has dominated, in war we're tied, sort of, and in everything else, including chess, America has tended to dominate.

Which is why the recent continuation of this rivalry , a vote game between the  respective national teams, was to be so interesting; and the game did not disappoint.

When I annotated this game, I didn't just want to analyze it, I wanted to tell the story behind the game. I also wanted it to be at least  marginally educational. The struggles and drama surrounding the moves, the surprisngly active defense and the unavoidable strangulation followed by a quick snuffing out of resistance.  There is also a lack of '!'s and '?'s, I was perhaps overcautious when awarding such marks. You'll note I didn't include the game result on the board, I wanted to make it suspenseful.

Great game, eh? Canada's ready for a rematch anytime America! Also, I'd like to thank RobertABrown, Kinthelt, bbrout, holojay, Spiffe and everyone else who helped on both sides!

"How can you possibly say that they're tied in war.  The NYPD could beat Canada by themself.  Wait, who won WWI and WWII? That's right.  America."

Yeah, and you were two years ****ing late each time.

  1. We only fought each other once to a standstill. I could have handed the win to Canada/England(Who we fought with) as we burnt down your capitol, but I didn't.
  2. I could have said we were ahead in war because, to the best of my knowledge, Canada has never lost a war. America, on the other hand, has lost wars inVietnam, Cuba, Russia (Strange but true, in 1918) and who knows how many Latin American countries, both directly and by proxy.
  3. No one tracks war in this way, it was clearly not meant seriously.

Canada use to have one of the largest armies of any country(including America) and now we have barely anything.

Well AMARU that's just what you get for taxing stamps and sending your worst general to fight them. And that's not my opinion, that's Eddie Izzard talking. And you can't contradict him.

Also, I think the American ego issue might be overblown, they're not that bad.

Probably.

Thank you Akuni. Also I love the fact (from the Canadians I have met such as my old boss) that Canadians "get" British humour.

I have nothing against Americans of course I'm just saying I prefer Canadians as they also seem less up themselves and egotistical.

The great US who got their indepenence from the UK. Will we never stop hearing about it!!! lol

Technically, we coul overthrow our head of state, we could rebel as you did; or to do it legally we would need an act of British parliament.

And what's wrong with being a citizen of the U.K., I love the U.K., they have Mock the Week, Have I got News for You and Prince Charles (Dry humour that is).

We Americans revolted against the British Crown; Canadians can't just overthrow their head of state. Well, at least they are citizen of Canada not of UK since the Canadian Parliament passed a law in 1947 requiring all resident of Canada to be Canadian citizen.

U.S. and Canada is tied up on war because we haven't kill Osama bin Laden.

See http://www.chess.com/votechess/game.html?id=10852908. As admin of the American group, I'd like to say this really was a good game. The only problem with the American group is that, because of the world league, we are very inactive. Would Team Canada like a challenge from the Northeastern America team that I mange, which is active and has 50+ more members than the American group?

Sorry, I meant no slight to the Canadian military, which has a long and successful history. I just meant we've only fought America once. Though we did also fight off fenian invasions that were based in America.

Actually, Canada has shown a great amount of determination in warfare. Remember that Canadian troops in World War I were the world's first stormtroopers! The Canadian military needs to get bigger, though.

This was a great game! I really liked the Knight moves around the b and c-pawns. Nice positional play, although quite a few tactics were overlooked; such as 42.Qg7+! as was pointed out. Still, it was a good game overall.

"And I can't believe you said we are tied in war. xD"

Well, I guess that depends on how you look at it. As far as I know we only fought one war, the War of 1812, which ended in a stalemate, but also in which British soldiers played the most important part.

Thanks AMARU; weirdly, we don't just not bastardize the Queen, her representative (The Governor General) has actual power here... yeah, it's weird I know.

I like the fact that Canada is still part of the commonwealth and that Canadians don't bastardise the Queens English as Americans do.

Nothing to do with Chess I know but I side with the Canadians on everything.

Kind of obvious Canada would win since you posted " America TENDED to dominate"

And I can't believe you said we are tied in war. xD
