Laugh Out Loud!
This is what it has come down to?
I need a clarification. Do the statistics you provided indicate computed probabilities of a win/loss/draw, or are they based on the number of games completed by players on a Grandmaster level with outcomes described as percentages?
Of course they come from results. How would you compute such a probability?
If you like statistics, here is one:1.Nh3 scores way, way better than 1.e4 per chess.com's database. The conclusion is obvious.
Alright, hello all! I've been trying to get my main openings sorted out, and I ran into a problem: I hate playing against e4. I want to avoid all of the theory in the Sicilian, and a lot of the ...e5 opening have the same issue (Ruy Lopez, Italian Game...).
So basically, what aggressive opening should I bring against e4? For reference, I play the King's Gambit (on white) or the Nimzo-Indian (black against d4).
There is Only (1) Reply to E4.
I've got two words for you: UTTER CRAP!
There is no way in hell that I'm playing 3.Nf3. The Hippopotamus only works when White has committed to a4 or Bc4 (preferably the former). In lines where White hasn't committed to either move, the Hippo is utter crap, and will always lose with correct play by White!
After 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d6, I play 3.f4!
I've explained before how I play my hippopotamus against such
"terrifying" setups. The most pitiful of superficial "arguments" against
hippopotamus is that many players believe them.
But I will surely keep on playing the hippopotamus - against ALL setups!
My name is Thorsten Michael Haub, you'll find many hippopotamus games
of mine in big databases. Of course, I've lost some of them, but you
also loose with other openings. When I lost these games, it was me
who lost, not the opening. By the way - my idol was the German
FM Bernd Feustel (former German blitz champion). He celebrated this
opening at the beginning of the eighties and equally fought against
a lot of prejudice and jokes.
DJ_Haubi, I do not believe that the opening you are playing is technically sound, but that your opponents aren't being aggressive enough. In some ways, the hedgehog would be a less unorthodox choice than the hippopotamus.
@ IMAfoltin: I'm really happy when my opponents try to overrun me.
But it takes a very long time (even for strong players) to understand
this opening by 100%. I also often lost at the beginning.
It might be the same problem with the hedgehog. Maybe that's why
my few tries with the hedgehog (of course not in real tournaments)
have been without success.
@thrillerfan
I would NEVER play 3.Bc4 in otb exactly because line i posted. Its in my opinion best mainline for black he can get.
You are wrong, I'm afraid. The line 3.Bc4 fxe4 4.Nxe5 d5 loses almost by force.
The real problem is 4...Qg5! which is very complicated, but Black has very good drawing chances. The whole line is analysed almost to death, no need to plagiarize here.
I don't think any opening with black is "passive"..I mean the Sicilian and Open games are supposed to be the most "tactical" right? But I've had games in the Caro Kann advance and French winawer more tactical than my games as black in the Najdorf or playing the Ruy.
Nh3 as white's opening move??? Black responds d5...? Nh3 is a viable (winnable) opening???
As I said, make your own conclusions about the value of winning percentages.
My problem with the sicilian was its popularity . When I played only 1 e4 as white ( 2 decades ) about 50% of my opponents would play a sicilian . Since the sicilian was my choice as black against 1 e4 as well it meant well over 50% of my games were sicilians , for about 2 decades . To combat this I added 1 d4 as white and added the french as black to my repertoire . This solved the sicilian problem for me .
