Best Single volume repertoire for black?

Sort:

Which single volume book do you think offers the "best" repertoire for black? "Dark Knight", "The Sniper" and "Move by Move: 1... d6" are the candidates. Any other suggestion?

"Best" for me would be low tech, solid and robust. I have enjoyed playing Owens defence, Old Indian but never enjoyed playing the Philidor.

Thank you! Nice input!

HOw about this one? It covers hyper accelerated dragon, the sicilian sidelines, Nimzo - bogo indian systems , d4 sidelines and the english opening

I hear a lot of good things about the book suggested above but I have never felt at home (trying) to play the Sicilian.

Surviving into the middle game is good enough for me.

Very nice cover! Well Done!

I love the cover

Yeah, nothing suggests the fundamental and unbreachable solidity of rock quite like a minecar full of it chiseled to tiny bits.

Although if you're defending with the white pieces like that, I suppose anything is okay.

Marin's Beating the Open Games.

People who ask this question need to be playing 1.e4 e5, and this is the best way to prepare, if you're intent on using an opening guide to study.

Objections: doesn't cover the Ruy.  Big deal.  Play the Berlin, look up some youtube videos on it, and buy Cox's Berlin Wall someday down the road.  NO "system" book covers every possible continuation anyway, so may as well take the best one knowing that the one omission is something you can find guidance on all over the place for free, anyway.

You shouldn't pick an opening based on whether we think a certain book is the 'best' repertoire. There are good books about many openings, so choose the right opening first.

I do agree with Aksy that 1...e5 is good to know. Marin's book is good but I'm not a huge fan of the format. BTW Marin has another volume on just the Spanish if you're interested.

My favorite 1...e5 book is Play the Open Games as Black by Emms. It also skips the Spanish and is pretty dated but I like it nonetheless. Another one I like is Play 1.e4 e5 by Davis which does cover the Spanish (Keres) and is in complete games format so it gives you a good overview of how play develops in certain lines.

@Fire, that is one of my favorites covers done by you. Nicely done. Are you working on any chess covers currently and could you give us a glimpse, pretty please?
