irving chernev, I think its called logical chess move by move, it gives full games but discusses each new opening move. the right way to play chess by pritchard/james is quite good on that, though its a general book on many things not just openings. there are a load of lessons on here too. good luck.

It's old but maybe what you might be looking for if you don't mind descriptive notation - The Penguin Book of Chess Openings (Hartson?)
What do you think of two books: Collins and Schiller? On general openings?
I took chessmicky's advice and bought Seirawan's book on openings. Very happy with it.
