Chess pieces for analysis board with 35 mm squares

I'm planning to get a chess board with 35 mm squares for analysis purposes. Where can I buy pieces? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • Maximum pawn base diameter of 25 mm (this will allow 2 pawns diagonally on the square)
  • Maximum king base diameter of 28 mm (assuming base diameter is 40-50% of height, this is a king height of 56-70 mm). 30 mm base might be acceptable.

Are you looking to by board and pieces separately? Because the easiest way would be to buy a travel set. My 12" travel sets have 30-33 mm squares, so maybe a 14" travel set would be fitting.

I have been looking for nice wooden pieces for my 40mm square chess computer for a while and found it rather hard to find pieces, that have some detail and preferably don't come with the ubiquitous German knights. Thankfully I found some vintage chess pieces. King height is 65mm, so 70mm sounds rather large for 35mm squares.

My 70cm Chavet king definatly looks kind of fat on 40mm squares. My 33mm square travel set's king has a height of 65mm. Obviously it also depends on factors other than height. The computer itself came with a 70mm king that was rather slender for its height.

If you are looking for pieces only, Philos offers chess pieces with a king height of 65mm. "Philos Napoleon" has some kind of Lardy-ish knight and "Philos Artus" has a German knight.

I bought a Rechapados Ferrer board, https://www.regencychess.ca/chess-boards/12-to-14-inch-boards/12.5-inch-walnut-and-maple-chess-board

I bought these budget pieces separately, https://www.regencychess.ca/chess-pieces/budget-staunton-chess-pieces/down-head-knight-sheesham-staunton-chess-pieces2.5-king

Other photos don't show the knight taller than the bishop.

They haven't arrived yet. I would like a Chavet Size 1,

The Philos Barbarossa 65mm set looks like a good option. https://philosshop.de/en/Chess-pieces-Barbarossa-king-height-65-mm-in-set-up-box/21131

I am still hoping to find a smaller Chavet set as well. I found one on Ebay a while ago, but lost the auction, unfortunately.

I have bought these for my 40mm board, king height is 65mm. They are from Philos as well, but I bought them used. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but as I didn't want a German knight, I was quite happy to find them.

What's wrong with your budget pieces? They look nice enough. I believe, Philos pieces are budget pieces as well.

The board and pieces haven't arrived yet. I'll have more opinions once it does. This is an experiment to see how I like 35mm squares. The board will fit better on my desk.

Oh, I just realized, that the knight is bigger than the bishop. This would bother me. I hope, it's just a mistake in the photo as you mentioned.

I like smaller boards and pieces, but I'm not much of a chess player. For the occasional game in my living room, anything between 30 and 45cm is absolutely fine.

I hope, you find a combination of board and pieces that you like.

To help you visualise your set up, my most recent post #326 in this thread -

- will give you a visual. The squares are ever so slightly smaller than your specs and the whole thing is a vintage re-imagination’ given both the board and pieces are from time’s and not purchased together. Note the pieces are weighted - in that they have magnets in their base… I felted them to improve their look and feel and now I have a tiny ‘weighted’ set, albeit I don’t use the magnets for the original intent. 😊

I think it's just an issue with the photo. Others show correct proportions. It will bother me if this is the case as well.

The board I ordered is non-folding. I like the idea of carrying it without the risk of it collapsing. If I'm happy with this size I might get the folding board as well.

Hi...I just ordered that 12.5" board from Regency Chess...I can't wait for it to arrive!

Here are the pieces I also ordered to complete my all-wood small Analysis 'set':

I used this guide to match piece size/base dimensions to chess board size/square size:

I bought the Rechapados Ferrer board (w/35 mm squares) from Regency Chess in Canada too (the 12.5" board you mention). It was a great price. I'm very impressed with the board. They have a 2.5" chess set that I added to the order. I want to get a Chavet size 1 to go with this.

Here's the Rechapados Ferrer 35 mm squares board (in the middle) compared to others.

Four pawns should fit on one square.

two-diagonal or four pawns to a square is usually good advise, however, a 9" or 12" board is not a FIDE tournament board anyways (with 50 to 60 mm squares). The pawn size works for me otherwise the pieces would be too small.

The 12" board fits 2-diagonal pawns on 35 mm squares. For reference, the large mouse pad board has 55 mm squares.

Did everything arrive? I'd love to hear how you like the board and pieces.

I just received an email that my Down Head Knight Academy Small Chess Set should be arriving on Wednesday! happy

For what it's worth, I really like the idea of moving a wooden, small analysis board around the house during study/videos/workbook lessons without having to roll up the 12" vinyl boards designed for analysis.

Considering this purchase is for 'analysis', I still have yet to find thin vinyl notation letters/numbers I can stick to the board without ruining it if i wish to remove the notation at a future date.

I wanted a board with coordinates but thought this was a good price for the board. I'm really happy with the board too.

I think finding vinyl decals are a great idea. They can even be removed. There's a printer-like device called a Cricut. It's often used by people doing arts and crafty stuff and is ideal for cutting this vinyl. Perhaps we need to find someone that can do a custom vinyl print for us.

We need to decide what font, font size and vinyl color to use. Helvetica?

I've also seen someone with a Chessnut smart board use a "lazy Susan" to allow for easy rotating of the board. Something like this might be a good idea: link.
