choosing an opening

How do i figure out what would be a good opening repertoire for me as black and white?

also how many openings should I play against 1.e4 and 1.d4?  Is one opening choice against each of them ok?  Or should i try to play all of them?

if i play the Kan sicilian, will people laugh at me because i did not choose to play the french defense?

Are you concerned about an OTB or online repertoire  or both ?

Unless you play something like the Grob against a GM, no one will laugh at your opening choice.  Both the Kan Sicilian and French Defense are respectable openings, so either one is fine.  At lower levels you can get away with using just one opening against each of White's first several moves, but once you start getting fairly good you might want to consider adding a second response to your repertoire.

This question was simple for me when I started .  I basically just copied Fischer's opening repertoire in the beginning but soon found myself modifying it quite a bit !  LOL Many players do it this way ... they pick one of their favorite players and just adopt their openings .

Just can play what fits with your style of play. Also what you like the best outcome when start at begin of middle game. Also not try to learn to many openings at same time. Important is not only to try remember those moves, also most important is what's the meaning of some of those moves and combinations. What's the character of a opening/variation. Is it attacking, defending, positional? etc etc

btw a REAL chess player will never laugh with someone who play some kind of opening to make his/her own repertoire, good?  So. Enjoy this noble game and have fun. tc

Is it ok if I don't want to play the sicilian?

i know that michael adams and nigel short both don't play it

and they got to the world championship

so is that ok?

don't get me wrong.  i do like playing the french

but it seems hard to play because you have to defend for a long time

and you have a cramped position durig the whole game

First learn one response against both e4 and d4. Play the same lines consistently so that you learn to understand the resulting middlegames and get the chance to see most of the different lines white may try. Eventually you may get bored to always play the same way but even if you don't I think it's recommendable after long enough time to learn new openings in order to increase your general understanding of different position types.

Which line to choose is a more difficult question to answer especially without seeing your games. Basically any respected opening should be fine but if you are just begining your systematic opening study I would recommend sticking to the openings that follow the classic strategy of occupying the centre with pawns - basically 1. e4 e5 and 1. d4 d5. Queens gambit is especially recommendable since it is almost a necessary prerequisite for Nimzo and QID.

Some openings probably have more to learn than others. Eg. after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 white can choose between many different lines whereas after 2... Nf6 his choice is more limited.
