Hi.  I started playing the French as black recenlty.  I had an opponent play 1. e4 e6 2.f4..   This game has transposed into ... what?  What would you do as black?

well, why did you play e6? that should answer your question.

Sounds like he's trying to play a Kings gambit.  I play 2...d5 and usually get 2.e5 which turns into a type of advanced variation. Not very solid by White. I like to follow up with Nh6 myself.

I tend to play 5Be7 then follow it up shortly with f6. I also often play the Knight to h6, which I may move to f7 (attacking e4) or f5 if White decides to play d4 or move his Bishop to e3.
