Giuoco Pianissimo or Anderssen Ruy Lopez?

Which of these two lines has more bite for white? Obviously the goal of both is to avoid heavy theory with an early d3 but still being able to press for winning chances. Discuss?

Off the cuff I would say the slow Italian avoids the Schliemann and the variation in the Ruy where black plays Nge7 after Bb5...with g6 to follow...

lol What on earth does the Anderssen Ruy Lopez look like.

Is he really going to make peeps scroll thru 100 different Ruy Lopez lines to find the Anderssen variation lol?

Ziggy_Zugzwang

I think it's an early d3 to avoid lines like open ...I've heard early d3 schemes for white have become popular - possibly also to avoid the Marshall ?

I only play d3 in the Ruy Lopez if my opponent is playing some form of Arch Angel  variation.

I play d3 to support e4 which helps blunt the bishop on b7.

The only other time I play d3 is if my opponent is playing a Berlin.

I play d3 to prevent the Berlin Wall.

It happens at move 4 though.

I do not know if the line has a name though.

I'm lost.

Slightly unfair Huey Smile I think these d3 systems for white do allow a slow build up without handing easy equality over to black.

Just because you're incompetent doesn't mean everyone else is.

I always call that the Steinitz Ruy.

And asking which of these 2 openings has more "bite" is kinda like asking which is more aggressive:  the Petroff or the Caro-Kann.

Valid point...although both of these ideas are used more commonly at top level nowadays than playing into 9.h3 madness.  Granted, d3 in the Ruy is usually reserved til after black commits to Be7, but at my level(sub-titled), having the bishop on c5 won't make a huge difference to who outplays who in the middlegame.  I just posted this to see if there were any differences I wasn't seeing.  Just by looking at the European Team Championships, the Italian seems to be becoming more popular than the Ruy, specifically the Guioco Pianissimo.

As black I am willing to just transpose via 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d3 Be7 5. O-O O-O 6. Re1 d6 7. c3 Na5 8. Bb5 a6 9. Ba4 b5 10. Bc2 c5, so I really don't see much of a difference.

I suppose you could play 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d3 to avoid the Petroff, but that allows 3...c6.

Music to his ears, I'm sure.

If you want to get a ruy lopez type position without any complications or theory go for the Italian.
