as unlikely as this may seem to some, I think chess openings by michael basman, crowood press ( I think) is superb. (and no , he doesnt recommend grob's attack) it goes where many other books dont, such as defending against scholars mate and the fried liver etc. highly recommended I think.

beginners should focus on getting better at calculation and threat detection. Openings are mostly irrelevant on beginner level. It is not going to win you the game if you keep dropping pieces or miss a two move threat. 

Concerning openings: 1. 1-2 pawn moves in the opening 2. develop your pieces 3. castle 4. develop your queen last - ish 5. see if make moves that stop your opponent from doing those thing.
