Question about the KID

Sort:

I just lost a game horribly to an NM, no surprise, however, he shredded me in the opening, one which I knew well. Any advice on where I went wrong and how to fix it for future games? Here's the game.

Any advice?

..Nd7 was poorly timed.  That's an extremely awkward move for Black, potentially, as it takes away a square from the Nf6.

Yet you could have been all right if you had played ...e5 - on move 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7.  Or course, after he is able to achieve e4-e5 himself, you are busted.  Especially after you put your R on e8, taking THAT square away from your N as well.  Honestly, I think this was a case of you not looking for good moves from your opponent and taking for granted you were going to be allowed to finish your opening setup.

condude2

Yeah, I was shocked that he was able to stop me where he did. I was planning on playing e5 on move 8, but, of course, that was too late.

Thank you so much for your help!

OK, I'll play e5 earlier in the future. And in your line, although Nde5 holds, It's not pretty at all and I don't want to be in that position vs. an NM.

condude2

Yeah, I'll play a few games with this and see if I can do better in the opening. I don't mind going out of the book, but I do mind having my kingside blown apart vs. someone 700 rating higher than me :)

Two good lectures on the KID from FM Grant Szuveges:

Horrible move-order...Nd7 was questionable at best(unless you're an Old Indian/Pirc player) and Re8 was a blunder.  If the KID is your main defense against QP than I would scrap that Rat opening junk...personal opinion though.

condude2

OK, I'd assumed I could escape the opening untouched, which I was clearly wrong about Smile

No reason to not go for the mainline move-orders...it will teach you how to play the opening better as a KID player since white has gazillions of different variations to throw at you and over time you will learn the best ways to combat the many sidelines.  That Nd7 move is much more commital than you might think...

Re8 was just awful. Had to play e5 then. Nbd7 isn't a bad move, but playing e5 instead gives black more chances to win in my opinion.

Yeah, if not e5, then c5.  Re8 only after white plays d5 and black plays e6-xd5.
