Unorthodox/Surprise Openings

Hi all. I have been playing chess for many years now. I am 2000 USCF and I have been playing some openings for a while now... the ponziani, the ruy, the danish gambit, etc. The Italian and Ruy and Scotch, well, they come up a ton. I want something that no one ever sees so its useful to play. Here is one of my favorites. It follows e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 c3?! It doesnt seem to do much, but if you really think you can beat me by playing against me... just message me. I am up for a challenge. If you have any reccomendations, then please tell me (for openings)

Dragec
Ponziani. Do you prefer to play against d5 or Nf6 lines?
Pawnpusher3

Either. D5 although looks worse really isnt all that bad. Nf6 is actually better for black from statistics and GM games

I've played the Gunderam Defense (1. e4 e5 2 Nf3 Qe7?!) a few times with pretty good results.

Typically, I try to keep the game closed and aim for a King's Indian type structure.

Whatever inherent weakness there is in this sort of offbeat stuff, it is usually offset by the opponent's lack of experience with it resulting in suboptimal play on their part.

At the amateur level this all works pretty well.

Umm... If your rating is under 1600, you haven't been playing any openings with pretty good results.

Learn to play the best lines and you'll probably do better.

Now that I've vented my spleen, I do love your handle!

Actually my rating is over 1600 (not much, but still...)

Thanks for the compliment though.

Have you tried B4? Good way to get bookworms out of their book lines.

Yes, I have played it quite frequently. I find it pretty good especially for blitz and bullet.

I can't count the number of bullet games I've played that have gone something like this:

Even against intermediate players Smile

Sorry. I saw the 13xx rating and jumped to conclusions. You'll soon be +1900 here.

I hope! Smile

LOL yea. I am nearly 2000 in real life 1988 right now. He says he likes the ponziani but it isnt the best choice. I like your idea of the orangutang. I havent played that opening very much and maybe I could try it.. instead of e5 though e6 is better.

Ricardo_Morro

Similarly, I have done well with 1. c3 against masters.

Pawnpusher3

trust me... I am 2000.... I clearly play at that level.. 1600 in live chess. I doubt you are even close. You guys need to chill out.

Pawnpusher3

thanks NN28.... to others: People here are pretty harsh it seems. I have always been good, but people judge without playing. You KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!

DW_Batty

I'm sorry if we have been rude, Pawnpusher3. It is just very hard for some of us to understand how a 2000 USCF has games like this:

Pawnpusher3

DW_Batty... we all have bad games. Have a soul.

Pawnpusher3

I don know how to cancel this forum... but anyone else who comments I am reporting.

Pawnpusher3

Note: if its rude I will report you. If not for all means comment.

Bongcloud Opening.

'Nuff said.

DW_Batty

You're right, that was rather rude of me, I'm sorry. I was just trying to illustrate why some people might be rather suspicious of your USCF rating claim. I realize there were bettter ways to go about that, and I should not have said anything at all.

I guess you can kind of deconstruct where my opponents go wrong though:

It isn't immediately apparent to them that after Bxb4 the bishop stops protecting the g7 pawn - I mean, g7 isn't attacked at that point so it doesn't seem important. Then, after Bxe5, they don't notice since they become fixated on "well I'll gain a tempo developing my knight while attacking the bishop"

and then... *smack* Smile
