What opening to play against d4

Sort:

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for ideas on an opening to play against d4. I like the positions that come out of the Paulsen Sicilian (which I play) against e4, to give you a baseline of what I paly. Do any of you play the Paulsen? If so (or even if you don't) then what do you play against d4? Also please include why you feel that defense is best.

Thank you for your help.

d5 and e6 because its solid!

You can do one of Dzhindzi's defenses:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3(or Nc3) a6 followed by c5.

I've been trying the classic Dutch for awhile. There is a series of four videos here if you want to study it.

I lose most of the games, but I would draw no conclusions from that. It seems like a fun, sharp opening.

Anyone else here who knows what they're doing play it?

Dereque Kelley in his series says that this has been proven to be the best line, but what does he know?

King's Indian is a solid defense against d4.  I've always enjoyed the lines it creates

I play the Benko Gambit/Benoni

budapest...buda-best

GreenCastleBlock

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6.

Against 3.Nc3 play the Nimzo-Indian (3...Bb4) and against other moves e.g. 3.Nf3 play the Queen's Indian (3...b6).  The Queen's Indian is the closest thing you're going to get to a Paulsen.  They are both very popular openings and you will have no trouble finding resources to learn them.

Yeah I agree with the above. I think those two opening systems go well together and I have a good friend (only rated around 1600 but much stronger than that IMO, he hasn't played a tournament in a while) who plays this repertoire as black. They are fairly easy to play, too, although you do need to know some theory to play the Nimzo in some lines.

moonnie

Asking what kind of opening you should play with black is about the same as asking what you should wear tonight. There are a lot of good options and also quite a few bad options but in the end you have to settle on clothes that are your style not the style of someone from a forum.

Queensgambit declined and open slav are probably easiest to understand and play if you are lazy

Classical Slav is a great choice also. I play it and it's extremely tough to beat. Just have a backup opening for players rated more than 200 points beneath you because if you don't, they may play the Exchange Variation against you and it will be hard to avoid a draw if they are dead set on it.

Semi Slav, Nimzo, KID, Benonis, Dutch, QGD are all fine for black.

Im wondering what clothes to wear tonight. It will be at the embassy of the Nederlands. Shall,I go classical Dutch, which is fun but I'm not winning with it, you the Lenningrad variation, which looks wiurd to me.

Considering your familiarity with the Paulsen Sicilian which features an active dark-squared bishop and pawn on e6 with semi-open play, I would steer you towards the Nimzo/QID, as GreenCastleBlock said, or maybe the Dutch.
