Which openings do you recommend for a 5|0 blitz OTB tournament?

Maybe something not too closed and not too complicated. :)

I've been playing stuff I normally play in Online Chess, but have been busted recently in some unknown Ruy Lopez Chigorin and KID lines...

Colle Zukernort, simple and always a chance of a Greek gift sacrifice with so little time to think

I think the key is to be unpredictable. Openings like b3, g3, Budapest Gambit, Benko Gambit or even King's Gambit would probably have surprise value.

Also, be creative! Openings that would be not so good in Classical, you can get away with in Blitz because your opponent simply does not have the time to come up with a strategy to defeat it.

Peter, please provide a line. I forgot a little bit about some of them. ;)

Not KG, I'm terrible at it. :D Others are fine, I considered them along with Kramnik's 2010 blitz repertoire.

Hi! With white the Colle against d5 and the Trompovsky against Nf6 and with black e5 against e4 and the kingsindian against d4. Playable against opponents of all levels and pretty dangerous when you know what youre doing. Message me to get some detailed opening lines.

I shall think as few as possible in the opening otherwise I'm always behind.

Colle?

The Colle Zukernort is a flexible system for white which can give numerous opportunities especially against an opponent who blindly develops which can be more likely in blitz. Pawns on d4, e3 and b2, bishops on d3 and b2, Knights on f3 and d2.

What speaks for my suggestion is that the openings I suggested with white are very similar. Often the Colle and the Trompovsky lead to very similar positons and the ideas are the same. And yes very often the creek gift is indeed possible.

Play the ones you're most familiar with! So you can just rely on pattern recognition/intuition meaning you don't need to calculate as much

The last time I played like this, I ended up with 6/11 and 4/13! 'M gonna try that Colle system instead. Or even Colle-Zukertort. :)

In my experience the vienna gambit as white, and the french as black have been very effective 5/0 over the board

possible lines that have closed centre allied to a flank attack would be good as you keep that strategy ie close centre and attack flank wher opposition king is

so for white a closed spanish for black maybe a french or even a dutch if you can keep centre closed

I have found that it's always best to play what you know. The well-worn paths are the easiest to follow.

Hi MSC, I'm not a very good blitz player myself, but I've seen two opposing strategies work fairly well in blitz :

- either play very simple and foolproof stuff that you can reel off quickly (like the London or similar, but that could also be main line positional stuff such as QGD Exchange var.)

- or go for some sharp stuff, but with some surprise effect (for example BDG or things like that)

What you want to avoid is strategically intricate stuff or well-known mainline theory, unless you're much stronger than your opponent.

Anything goes. Tactics will count more than anything else at blitz time controls. So you must be alert for any tactics that may come your way. But whatever you do, DO NOT get into a cramped position just to save a pawn. Stay as active as possible.

For blitz as white I mainly use 1.e4 e5 2.d4 ed 3.Bc4. Open lines by move 3 and an immediate attack on f7. For black I mainly play the Latvian against 1.e4 and Kings Indian against 1.d4 to prevent any proper Stonewall or Colle-Zukes attack. It would require me to play e5 and either occupy it or break up White's pawn formation supporting it.

Close the center and attack on one side. Preferrably where the other player has his/her king.

Good luck with the tournament.

Thank you all, recommendations still appreciated (for future tourneys, too). It's starting at 17h and I'm leaving at 16h, so still 1h30min to prepare. Laughing

I don't really like gambits, I don't know. I always feel nervous like I won't be able to gain that advantage. Hicetnunc, what is BDG, I can't remember it. Smile

VLaurenT

Bdg is Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, but if you don't like gambits :-)

MSC157

Oh, of course, haha. I thought like BuDapest Gambit, Black-squareD Gambit and nonsenses like this. :)

Yeah, not a fan of gambits in general. I also have no idea how to answer the Scotch gambit. I've been destroyed a couple of times in Online chess, too.

Play blitz with shorter time intervals than you will play at the tournament. It will feel like you have ample of time.
