Well played attack. I enjoyed playing through it.

I remember after our game that you spoke at length about a ...b5 variation in the Tarrasch. You've got a good handle on openings.

Thanks - Long time no see or hear! Smile

Oddly enough, despite it being over 3 years ago now, I can still feel the painful after effects of that 18-move mauling in our Tarrasch Game (Tarrasch Defense that is, not French Tarrasch, just to clarify since the thread is on a French game/variation) that you slapped on me.  Frown

And it was really just one mistake you made, moving the wrong night to e7.

Nice attack and I agree the Adavance Variation is very good against French Defense.

This is crazy I’m a 2040 player and I’m taking up the Advance variation from the white side because Nc3 is immensely complex. I enjoy the positions. That said, the Advance is USUALLY what black players are after (otherwise why risk it...) but

The Advance isn’t “garbage”. Yes it plays into blacks hands a little, but at lower levels (Sub-GM/IM) it gives white tons of attacking chances, excludes the awesome Winawer and a massive amount of theory. A no brainer for sub 2200 players - a solid choice.

Btw, I HATE playing against the french so much i was contemplating giving up 1.e4 until i realized! A chance for a true fist fight on my own terms. Instead of playing in blacks home field.

Interesting game, I used to play the advance variation for fear of the Winawer but after achieving greater confidence against the poisoned pawn I have finally transitioned to Nc3 which I believe is the better move.

As a kid I was fixed with the don't waste moves in the opening dogma and thought the advance was garbage but closing the centre and gaining space in the kingside is well worth the "waste". I think the french is a good defence but in some lines white seems to have all the fun, mainly the Bolelavki.

Move 17 Bf4 looks very strong

edit: ..... ok just saw that someone noticed that before ^^

I play the French exclusively against against E4 . The Advance Variation is the easiest for me to play against because the D4  pawn becomes a target very early in the match and white has to  protected it with pieces instead of  a pawn after the exchange with c3 . However, black can still get crushed if he or she is too passive in a cramped position.

congratulations on your victory! I played 1d4 for 8 years otb and just now learning 1.e4 stiff. I'm horrible vs the French. I wish I knew more about how to go about counter play as black attacks my center pawns.
