Yeah. That's great.

By the way, people generally frown upon members who make hundreds of thread posts each day. Just a hint.

EDIT: I did not make this thread. The OP deleted his post.

I concur; chess.com doubles as a community.

However, there are also negative consequences of this:

  • you may be distracted from your games
  • you may be obliged to play lesser players because you're friends, breaking the rule of improvement "Only play people better than you."

that surely doesnt apply between friends ... as its simply for fun??

Could you please elaborate?  If you mean that friends may feel compelled and obliged to accept a friendly challenge from a friend, that is what I am trying to say.  There are negative aspects of friendship, unfortunately...

So ur telling me that higher rated players shouldn't play lower rated players, friends or not, coz it does nothing to help improve their skills? Wot about the needs of the lower rated "friends" who they may wanna play just for fun?

That's a very interesting observation, 6s, that I hadn't thought of.  If everyone only plays people higher than them, who are these people they're playing?  The opponents of the people playing people higher than themselves would be playing people lower than themselves, the people who are against the people who they are.  A paradox, no?

Maybe there are some statistics to show that the people who only play better people improve their game at a faster pace than those who play lesser people?

That's a very good point, 6s.  It should be further analysed.

but again thats not necessarily the case ... i have been playing chess online now for over 2 years and constantly play people higer rated than myself yet as we all saw in that graph in that other thread that my rating has gone up wot?? maybe by around 100 points?? i play for fun and if i pick up something along the way then fantastic ... chess first and foremost should be about fun, as soon as it stops being fun u pack up and go home (metaphorically speaking)

Ah, then that's the answer.  You're completely different from me.  I don't think chess is fun at all!  It's boring and tedious.  I just play to improve, and getting better is the sole reason for being here.

The people who play lesser people must be people like you, who are here for fun.  (how chess is associated with fun, I have no idea, but if you think so, I respect that)

but if chess for u is tedious and u wanna improve how can u do that??

a film i saw recently said "u cant improve at something all the time u look down ur nose at it" and i completely agree ... how can u sit here hour after hour and say its just for improvement?? u r here coz u wanna play chess ... fine i respect that as well but how can u expect to improve at something if u think its tedious and boring??

the best way to improve at anything is to relax and enjoy yourself with it

I'm not naturally gifted at any sport, and so far as I know, chess is the only "sport" in which skill is dependent primarily upon practice, rather than inherent or physical skill.

I joined chess.com so I could improve enough to make my school's chess team next year, which I failed to do this year.  The more activities you do, the more colleges you get into, so I'm just on chess.com to improve to make the school team to get into college.

Studying is boring too, but I have to do that to get into colleges too.  Despite its "boringness," it is something that must be done to ensure a well-paying career.

WOW and if that is why ur playing chess then i feel sorry for u ... u r not going to take ur time and enjoy the splendour and wonder of the game

GMoney5097

Yeah, I'm playing to win.  Kind of funny coming from a <1050, huh?  Smile

Oh well, let's hope I can bring that up...

Its_All_Good

ur wrong.... there are naturally gifted chess players.... who will rise to the top without too much effort..... bobby fischer is a classic example

blackfirestorm

but as i said u cant play well all the time u look down ur nose at it ... if it is a chore u hate doing then u wil do the bare minimum to win the game and for someone looking to use chess to get into a better class in college thats not enough to want to win.

i want to improve but not at the expense of having fun ... i am a full time mum who enjoys playing chess and yes i am a mere 1200 player myself but if i play a game against enough decent players then i am bound to pick something up along the way.

i am fortunate to have many decent rated friends who have no issue playing me in an unrated game ... but all the time i hate the game no matter how much i study im never gonna get anywhere ...

u need to open yourself up to the game and take it in not just "oh i wanna get better so i can get into a better college" ... that kind of attitude will get u nowhere

i do happen to agree with u but well everyone has to start somewhere and if he hates the game how can he hope to improve

Its_All_Good

if anyone hates anything.... how can they improve.... simple.,... they cant

GMoney5097

You can't really make the game fun for yourself...

I play the Italian all the time against ... e4 ... Nc6, which is generally considered one of the most boring openings in chess.  However, I heard that it was recommended for players at my level, so I do what I can to play well.  I would win at the expense of fun, because I could always have fun doing something else, like listening to music while playing, etc.

Its_All_Good

kepler,,,, yes u are correct in studying & practice,,,, all world champions have spent yrs studying the game..... but fischer was a natural at the game... made outragious moves that only a naturally gifted person can make...

it like ronnie o'sullivan in snooker..... hrs & hrs & hrs of practice,, but he is a natural at the game

GMoney5097

Yes, there are naturals, but that isn't required to be good.  There was a man who became a grandmaster at the age of 80, so practice can make you a good player.  Not as good as the great naturals, but perhaps good enough to be titled.

Its_All_Good

yes i agree.... most good or great players are that good cos of the studying and practice they have made..... chess is a prime example u get out of it exactly wot u put into it
