Aborting too many live games

It has come to my attention recently that I am getting told that I am aborting too many live games? However, I believe I have perfect reason to. Before the start of these games I quickly check the notes of the person I'm playing to see what their history is like, 75% of the time, it's not very good. They have comments on their profiles from people saying "uses a computer, do not play!", "time-bandit, plays stupid moves to win on time" and "disconnects/lets clock run down when he's losing, don't play this guy" or "plays white once and then doesn't offer rematches". I don't want to play people who don't play the game properly, so why am I the one being warned about not playing them? In my opinion, there needs to be closer moderation of certain players and maybe even a new system where people can give a thumbs up or thumbs down about whether they're worthy or playing on the site. Might get people to start bucking their ideas up a bit.

Thoughts?

Interesting. A big problem that I can see with that is that pressing thumbs down is much easier than writing a comment. People could easily abuse this and downvote opponents after a bitter loss.

chessman_calum

But surely they would be overhauled by the majority, if they are infact a good person?

WakeUpKid

dont hit abort then let the server abort the game

chessman_calum

Does the same thing. "Keeping your opponent waiting"

75% of players draw negative comments?  C'mon!

Accusations of computer use, unless there's clear and compelling evidence are just one player's opinion -  and just as likely to be sour grapes.

As for "time bandits," thwart them by only playing with an increment.

Not offering (or accepting offers for) rematches has nothing to do with "playing the game properly. "  There are any number of good reasons for declining a rematch. Yet some people think it's their right to get one.  No.

Disconnectors are admittedly a pain in the butt,  but the way I look at it,  I was commited to the time for the game anyway,  and my 'compensation' for this bad behavior is a win!

Closer moderation of "certain players"?  Thumbs up/down votes to decide who is "worthy" to play here?  A surefire prescription for destroying this site!

Agreed. The thumbs up/ thumbs down system would probably be full of trolls within days.

I think it is a valid issue, but thumbs up or down not so sure.  I used to check on each player but had same issue you explain and stoped doing that.   The other day I had the following game 1.- e4 e5 2.Nf3,  I was White and he/she never moved again so I had to wait 15 minutes to get my win but that is besides the point, just an example of things that do happen.  The way it works now I just play whatever I get and try to enjoy the game.  Another, and perhaps, simpler solution would be to extend the time the server takes in aborting the game so that we can check Notes of each player.  Cheers.

Fair comments I suppose. I can understand 1 or 2 comments on someone's profile being sour losses, but not umpteen pages of them. I've never had a bad note on my profile. I've been on the site 5 years and a half.

chessman_calum

And at my level (1300-1400) yes, 75%

You also must consider the illegitimacy of these complaints you read on your opponent's profile. In all likelihood, the players writing these complaints were simply irritated at being beaten and looking for an excuse such as "He uses a computer" or "He pulls cheap tricks to win on time."

chessman_calum

Yes but that wouldn't explain pages and pages of them. Maybe the odd one or two. Like I said, I've never had any and I've playing over 5 years and over 1000 live games

Let's make it happen!

you have every right to act like a policeman or censor and quit games whenever you wish...but dont expect others to agree or like it!

chessman_calum

landwehr: maybe I'm too tired, but I don't understand your comment at all. and sisu: I like the abort feature. If you realise you dont have time for a game, you can cancel it and no-ones time is wasted.

landwehr

you check out players before you accept a challenge and decide on what you read about their history...or did I misread your original post?

Sisu: I have no idea what the abort button is there for then. Either way it stops me playing idiots until I use it "too many times".

Macer75 + 335394862. My thread isn't anything like the this other guys thread. I'm not worried about playing someone with the name "killer" or a random selection of letters + numbers (although, by chance, these ARE the people that seem to have all the hate on their profiles), I'm against having to play people where multiple people, over multiple pages have said the quotes I originally posted.
