The status bar was a little message bar where we put thing like Beware the Smiling Assassin, or we are on Vacation, or what ever we wanted. It was on the old system, when beta came out it dissapeared and is no longer on the home page. It's still on the Online chess settings page under "My accounts" page.
Ohhh right. That text is now used exclusively to show your "status" in echess games when you're on vacation. The "social" function of the status seems to be met (at least for the most part) by the Notes feature.
