I don't know what is worse, the fact that there are people out there who persecute based on their social code that is inapplicable in the real world, or that Coco knows that his brothers participates in said persecution and does nothing to stop it.

I think being called a "geek" or "nerd" is a good sign because it let's you know 2 things:

1) You are not with the "in" crowd

2) You are intelligent

Most geeks do not get rich... i find that hilarious that people have that stereotype just like people have the stereotype that cool kids and jocks end up with crappy lives. I was on both the chess team and the football team,,, i interacted with all social "clicks" in HS and college and I know plenty of jocks that are now wealthy and plenty of "geeks" that shovel crap for a living.

Although it is true that not all geeks are the ones making the money, there are definitely quite a few. You can't tell me that with the dependance on PCs in our world today that geeks are not going to be getting jobs (programming, troubleshooting, engineering purposes, architecture).

I was one of those ironic combos.  In high school I was 1st clarinet for the school concert band, but also in the jazz band, member of the chess club, but also on the varsity soccer and crew (rowing) teams.

Now I work in IT and probably epitomize geek.  I'm a complete shut-in for the most part, get together with a few friends every few weeks and that's it.  Fortunately, I married a woman who's as geeky as I am, so I think I'm set for life :)

Well I have respectively and deservingly taken upon the title as "nerd", or in the streets "super nerd." So in all respects to those who have posted that they are proud of being geeks, I consider us nerds. But, the label is not important. Is it not better to be atypical of everyone else? Especially in the feild of academics and in intelligence? Or the arts? When you take into account the amount of stereotyping, conformity, labeling, and inept society. That surrounds you, that type of label (geek). Is not something to discourage you but rise you above the loathsome filth and musk that strains your breathing!

Being thought of as a "geek" has very little to do with intelligence, chess, computers, or any other of those things. You could be a complete idiot and still be considered a "geek" (like if you're some crazed Star Wars fan or something). Being a geek usually implies devoting yourself utterly to one single pursuit, to the exclusion of having any kind of social skills or a life outside that one single interest.

So really, it has nothing to do with what you pursue, but is has everything to do with you as a balanced person. Personally I consider Chess to be a thinking man's game, and any REAL man has to be as smart just as he is strong, and chess is a great way to exercise the mind. Plus after a while you learn to apply the same critical thinking that you do in chess to real life situations thus making your life better, which is what it's all about :)

ROFL.  You classify yourself as a geek, under the assumption that you use this amazing chess site, but, before this you said you give geeks wedgies.... How much of a hypocrit can you be before you realize the irrationality of your actions?

I agree with the sentiment expressed, just the context it was expressed with.
