Considering Small Redesign to Chess.com - Thoughts?

ok - ignore the fact that some stuff is missing from the page (opening of the day, etc) - this is just for you to look at the header/footer and menu stuff.

thoughts on this? it's just a concept. btw, it looks REALLY cool with custom themes :)

looking forward to feedback...

I'm unable to see the image.

elxan

fixed image

groteskbold

It's an evolutionary change rather than a revolutionary one. It's cleaner-looking, less busy-- that's good.

From a corporate brand standpoint, you might want to fix the logo onto a permanent background on the home page, rather than letting the background behind the logo vary with a custom theme. On some custom themes, the logo comes across badly.

Groteskbold (you knew you'd get design commentary from a font, right? LOL)

Knightsight

Very nice indeed.

The only difference I see is the very top with the green color and the "Sign
Up Today!" to the top right(am I missing more?) of the page.

I think it adds a little bold color and catches your eye at the top where it
should be, so it makes sense to  me.

Also, the yellow letters go well with the green.  A lot of marketing studies indeed suggest the two-color system.

On the constructive criticism side it might be nice to have slightly larger
type for those of us that use reading glasses now, but it may not be possible.

Ummm... it's a very subtle difference....Innocent

nah...i'm joking... actually it gives a smart touch, so it's OK

pdela

ok I've got it, it's to customize margins :)

it's nice

Okay, I guess the gray border is different as well.  It does look crisper and more
professional, which is always good.  One of the complaints about ChessTV I
have heard a lot of is that the board needs to be upgraded there as well.  Ciao.

mprhchess

i like it!! very subtle though

I have a coupled of ideas to make the page "looks more attractive" but i guess these will not "fit" with the "standarts" of the page

feel free to suggest!

yes, this design is meant to be a subtle move forward, not a dramatic change.

TheFairMan

I thought we could just change the design ourselves... and, no, I don't like that design... it's too dark and hard on the eyes... keep it light and green for your father's sake!

And, heh, the owner of the site is a chrome user too! *high fives* ^_^

furtiveking

I like the dark, it adds some contrast to the look.

qixel

If you hadn't pointed out this was a change, I don't think I would have noticed.

In general, however, I've always thought the chess.com homepage was more appealing and functional than ICC's.

DeepGreene

Thumbs way up.  It's subtle but attractive, and does seem more contemporary than the current square-cornered design.

WhiteEagle

I like it, but like grotesbold said, Put the logo on a permanent background. I've seen it on some of the custom themes here, and it looks positively ugly!Frown
