Grob is Healthy!

A friend and I have agreed on the following bet:

Starting today we promise to loose 15 lbs before April 1st. The consequences for not reaching the goal should be as follows:

Loosing 14 lbs or less = Playing nothing but Grob for a full month

Loosing 8 lbs or less = Posting shortest loss as showcase game

Join us in our quest if you dare! April's Fool might turn out to be very appropriate.

I believe in public peer preassure!

likesforests is in! Although the last thing, the very last thing, I want to do is play the Grob in an OTB Open section and then show the games to my coach afterwards. ;)

The better our health, the longer we can play, the more likely we are to become masters! World champion Anand has an excellent daily exercise routine. Tongue out

woodencardboard

hah, I'd be too lazy and just memorize grob lines. good luck to you, though. that sounds like a funny idea.

farbror

Yeah, we'd better reach the goal, likesforests!

Any more takers!?

Today will be my official Henri Grob Day! I kickstarted my health program with an overwhelming and totally irresistable "smörgåsbord" offered by my agency.

Hard Work to follow or Grob it is!

Dec-09: Began with a fast-food breakfast sandwich and for lunch: two bowls of pasta loaded with parmiggiano and bacon! Oh well. I bought a ciak as a food journal.

Dec-10: +0.2lbs. Oops, yesterday's plan failed! Today I try more bacon, less pasta. But you know? I just might do 15-min of walking at the gym.

cutting weight is easy...keeping it off is the challenge...Laughing

I wouldn't say easy, but yeah, keeping it off is definitely the bigger challenge. 95% regain the weight within 5 years! But we have to do something. I've maintained a 30lb weight loss for six months... now seems like a good time to lose a bit more.

Dec-11: -1.2lbs in 3 days... the bacon diet's working! At this rate, I'll lose 45.6lbs by April 1st, and never have to play the Grob again. I wonder how farbor's doing?

Dec-12: -0.4lbs in 4 days... I had to stay up late last night, which meant more meals/day than usual, and that equated to a small weight gain.

Dec-13: -1.0lbs in 5 days. Back on-track. At this rate, I'll lose 22.6lbs by April 1st.

Dec-14: -2.0lbs in 6 days.

Dec-15: -4.6lbs in 7 days.

Dec-16: -3.8lbs in 8 days.

Dec-17: -3.2lbs in 9 days.

Dec-18: -3.4lbs in 10 days.

"Begin - to begin is half the work, let half still remain; again begin this, and thou wilt have finished." -- Marcus Aurelius. What are some keys to weight loss?

  1. Goals that are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Eg, exercise for 15min/day and keep a food journal. You don't control the results. You only control what you do daily, so focus on that.
  2. Motivation. Chess! In this case I'm forcing myself to play the Grob if I fail, and seeing a chess coach as long as I stick to the plan.
  3. A balanced diet. Don't do anything crazy and temporary, like going all cabbage soup or eliminating a food group. That leads to rebounds.
  4. Food journals. Dieters who keep them lose twice as much as those who don't!
  5. Cut out soda and fast-food. For many, the first places to cut.

Likesforests, your first two points are exact replicas of what your head of year tells you in secondary school (11-16 year olds). The only problem being, we just end up laughing at how the teachers came up with an acronym for SMART...

The grob shall never soil my pawn-moving hand.  No can do...

Fair enough, although I didn't learn about the Grob in secondary school. Tongue out

The letters may be silly and maybe we've heard them before, but there's a bit of wisdom to SMART goals. Often we set goals where we have no direct control over the outcome... such as gaining E elo in M months or completing T tactics problems in D days. And then for some reason we feel like a failure when we do not meet these goals.

A better goal would be to average 30 minutes of tactical study/day for the next three months. That's something you directly have control over, and you can fairly reward or punish yourself based on the outcome. You are less likely to quit.

Dec-19: -4.4lbs in 11 days.

Dec-20: -4.2lbs in 12 days.

Dec-21: -4.8lbs in 13 days

I know it's a bit late, but I just saw this thread... I'll join in! I think I can still make the 15# mark by April 1st.

 Nice! Good Luck, Baseballfan!

The Grob isn't that bad.  While positionally suspect, it offers White many tactical possibilities.  And right now, I'm trying to gain weight, not lose weight.

We will see on Monday! I have been good at keeping my Food Journal and I have had a few spinning sessions.

December 22: -4.4lbs (Eat that Henry Grob!)

Dec. 22: +4 lbs... oy, off to a very bad start, but I will not get discouraged. I'm on a new medicine, which I think is throwing my body out of whack a bit, but I will prevail!
