No Sillyness Here!

Some silly arguments that won't show up here at chess.com: takebacks, disconnections, and super-blunders.

There absolutly is no takeback, period. With time controls this long, its my own fault when I make a boo-boo. I have only had one mouso (I have a bad mouse) in over 200+ games because I dragged when I usually click from and to. (The mouso move turned out to be better, seriously) Also, there is the option to submit your move.

"Do you really really want to move there?" asked the concerned server.

Disconnections are much less of a problem since we have days to log back in and continue a game. Weather might still knock us off the internet for a while. Yet if we can get to a computer then we can pause ALL of our games with vacation time! How great is that?

Okay so super-blunders will always be with us. If a titled master can toss a piece in a correspondence game, anyone can. But really long time controls have cut my piece loss by quite a bit. Not just because I make less blunderinos but because it gives me time to think do I really really really want to sacrifice mateial for this attack?

This really is a 'chess' site not just another yahoo-blitz-pixel-pushing site. There is a chance for each of us to create something artisitic here. ^_^

I have no major objections to your sentiments, but I would add that disconnections could become a "problem" if they are caused by the site itself (as in site maintenance) AND the user is not able to log on to pause for vacation time because of it.  For games with time controls of 5 days or longer, this probably causes no practical problems.  However, for 1 day or even 3 day games, some forfeits could occur even though the user made every attempt to connect.

i admit it, i let my girlfriend take back a move in an unrated game. the guilt is killing me! i should have dashed apart her defense and crushed her for the blunder!

we always add time back on if there is server maintenance :)

Yes Erik but what if someone could only log in once a day and you had maitanance then. The extra time wouldn't matter. (Although if someone can only check once a day and doesn't have timeout protection like me than they shouldn't be playing one day time controls.

You should ALWAYS let your girlfriend/wife/significant other take back a move, especially if it's unrated.   The chess game will end eventually...your daily life will continue on!

This might sound like sacrilege, but I don't think that takebacks are entirely a bad thing. I've played a couple of takeback games when I was informally teaching a student or two; they're useful, but not really a good idea for serious games.

And yes, you HAVE to let your girlfriend takeback a move. Isn't that a written law somewhere? :-)

I prefer no take backs when playing weaker players. I prefer to give a rook or even a queen, but no takebacks, and no exceptions.
