The Scandinavian Haters Group

Hey everyone,

Join this group if you don't like the Scandinavian chess opening! (1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5) Here's the link to the group and the description is below. Smile

Thanks,

Leo

First of all, don't worry. This isn't a discrimination group - it's purely about the opening. My two best friends are Scandinavian and I think they're cool, I just don't like their chess opening. I always hate bringing the queen out early and the Scandinavian does exactly that. It makes for a lousy beginning center on both sides, creates general havoc, with two pawns gone at the THIRD MOVE, and brings the queen out too early. There's nothing I hate more than being white and having to play against the Scandinavian. It's not that I can't defend against it, I just think it's a poor opening that makes a poor game. So, join, share your favorite anti-Scandinavian chess game stories, and above all, do NOT play the Scandinavian. ; ] -LeotheLion402

I quite like to play against the scandanavain as if plack plays incorectly then white can develop while balck spends 2 or 3 moves moving his queen around.

Establishing a group for haters of the Scandinavian seems a bit exaggerated. It's not a great opening but it's pretty solid and fairly reasonable.

Summum_Malum

Isn't 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 ... the Scandinavian, then follows the two mainlines: 2...Qxd5 or 2...Nf6 ..

LeotheLion402

Atos-

I'm sorry you have a problem with it. I personally dislike the opening, so I started a group against it. There's nothing that says you have to join, though I'd appreciate your support, of course. Perhaps you are right that haters of the Scandinavian takes it a little over the top, but I thought that the more politically correct and, not to mention, kinder "The People for whom the Scandinavian Chess Opening holds no interest" seemed a bit, well, posh. I'll stick with The Scandinavian Haters if it's all right with you.

Summum_Malum-

I'm afraid you're a little confused there. The Main Line of the Scandinavian (according to chess.com at least) proceeds 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5. The Nf6 variation you mentioned is known as the Modern Variation. I've never had the chance to play against it, so I can't tell you much about it.

Dazbedford-

Sure, I like being able to develop while black moves his queen about the board, but I enjoy playing the Italian Game and the Scandanavian ruins that right off the bat. Other openings that avoid the e4 e5 King's Pawn Opening like the Caro-Kann, the Sicilian, or the French, I have no problem with, I just dislike when black brings out his queen so early.

Devoid-

Ivanchuk is a Grandmaster and he is so far removed from my level that I won't say a word against him using the Scandinavian. No, The Scandinavian Haters is for people around my level that dislike the Scandinavian opening. Smile

Thanks to all!

But what happens in such a group.

I dislike the Scandinavian.

I also do not like the Scandinavian.

Let us not post games or talk about the Scandinavian.

I concur.

LeotheLion402

Maradonna-

On the contrary, we WILL discuss Scandinavian openings and how to beat them. Different variations will be studied and people can ask questions about how to deal with certain problems they've encountered while fighting the Scandinavian. Posting games will be encouraged, as I said in the group's only forum post. And perhaps, if the group grows, we will take on groups that actually like the Scandinavian. Also, if anyone wants to study openings that begin other ways besides e4, to entirely break free of any possibility that the Scandinavian could occur, that would be wonderful.

Oh good, I was worried for a second, one of my favorite blitz openings as black goes 1.e4 d5 2.exd Nf6  I guess even though this is a scandinavian, as long as I don't re capture immediately you won't hate me Wink

evanvwk

I never liked the Scandanavian Opening either, so count me in. May I propose, though, that "Scandanavian Opening Haters" might have been a better descriptor? But I ain't gonna worry too much about it.

ASpieboy

I actually like the Scandinavian. That is, if I'm white. I LOVE chasing around that queen! I literally jump for joy when someone plays d4 to my e4.

evanvwk

At any rate, who knows where these names come from? Was the Scandinavian Opening really developed in Norway, Sweden, Finland or Denmark? Was the Sicilian Defense invented in Sicily? Openings named after persons, okay -- it's a safe bet that Aron Nimzowitsch came up with the Nimzowitsch Defense, Ruy Lopez, Caro-Kann, &c. -- but I've kind of assumed that French Defense, Polish Opening, Saragossa Opening &c. were just more charming & romantic-sounding names than the likes of "1. e4 e6" (and those more poetic names probably probably predate the now-standard abbreviated algebraic notation anyway). But perhaps someone more savvy in the intricacies of chess can set me straight on this score.

1.d4 :)

naw, only teasing, sounds like a solid plan.

Good luck.

Kernicterus

I think at the under 1400 level, playing the Scandinavian is a sureway to lose.  White does very well.

zxb995511

Well I play the 1.e4 d5 2.exd Nf6 variation and I have played nothing but that variation for a while now with great sucess. As a matter of fact it is virtually the only opening I play...no joke I as a rule am only playing black now (unless I am challenged) (and have been doing so for many months) most people play e4 and I play exclusively the 1.e4 d5 2.exd Nf6 variation of the scandinavian and my sucess with it has been more than just moderate. It is not an exageration to say I score at least 70 percet win rate with it. you could look into my profile yourself if you have doubts.

mhtraylor

If the opening is so poor and brings the Queen out too early, shouldn't you relish the fact that your opponent plays it, instead of hating it?

Sincerely,

A Center-Counter Fan

Orangehonda-

Nah, I just hate when black brings the queen out so early. And I wouldn't hate YOU anyway... Wink

Evanvwk-

Thanks for your support! Your proposal is sound; I'll change the name. And I wouldn't be the person to advise you on the history and origins of chess openings...

ASpieboy-

That's fine, I just don't like the queen being out there so early. Chasing her around is kind of fun, but it means a lot of power right there...

Maradonna-

Hahahahahaha, well, that is a possibility!! But yeah, I did mean following the main lines. Smile

AfafBouardi-

I agree, that's why I created the group! Laughing Ivanchuk can do what he wants, but I'll stay away from the Scandinavian...

zxb995511-

Okay... That's fine, but around here would not be the place to advertise that. It still has Scandinavian in the name and I'm not sure that... I'm kidding. Laughing Do what you want and I'll do you what I want.

Thanks again, everybody!

Leo

Kernicterus

Is there a 1.d4 haters group?  I'd join that.

TheGrobe

I came here expecting something else.

"Shut up!  Bloody Vikings! You can't have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam."

think I might start a group called Ivanchuk can do what he wants. maybe get some T's made up, face masks.

tigergutt

the big question is do you really hate the scandinavian? have you tried all the lines against it? i would not be suprised if you found something against it you like:)
