Which will be solved first?

There was a short story by a sci-fi writer. I am sure I would not do it justice. But at the end the implication was that there will not be enough time to solve chess before the universe ended, or something along those lines ... anyone know the story I am talking about ... I should find it ... very good!

Following on from Variable's allusion: If we submit all of the single character comments, followed by the two-character comments and so on, before long all possible topic contributions will have been made. Will this lead to the same cosmic consequences as in the short-story? (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nine_Billion_Names_of_God for a refresher).
Incidentally, is there there a way to reference individual postings within a topic (other than the current last one) perhaps along the lines of http://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/which-will-be-solved-first?id=1488989 ?

I think that tic-tac-toe will be solved first, followed by Connect Four, then Othello, Scrabble, backgammon, chess, poker, and Go.
Only bridge and Stratego will remain forever unsolved.
forgive me, but how does one 'solve' chess? is this to say, discover every possible combination of moves? as in, every game that could ever be played, has been played?

If I may suggest a shortcut?
- Create a computer [program] capable of beating even the best human players all the time.
Many people would consider the game 'tamed' - even if not 'solved'. - Solve chess - whatever that means.

Solving chess means finding who wins with best play. For example, in tic-tac-toe, we all know that with best play it is a draw. But, in Connect Four, with best play the first player wins. In chess, ______________.

Hopefully they "solve" cancer and aids first. What is this obsession people have with solving chess? I mean if you're a scientist working on it I can see how you'd be preoccupied with it, but for the rest of us it is interesting but not essential?

if chess.com (not chess) were solved, think of all the psychological disorders that could be cured. That's worth a little effort, surely.

I hope they will never "solve" chess, I'm still having fun playing it
More seriously the best program at his highest difficulty level on a new low cost computer can already beat almost all human players i.e 99,9% of them if you except the best of the grandmasters.
but we still have fun playing among humans.

WINDOWS will never be solved. If it were, that would be version: WINDOWS-Infinity+1. HOWEVER ... long before that comes about, Microsoft will possess ALL the money in the world, making new versions OR upgrades pointless since no one can buy them. And so, at that time, LIVE CHESS can be brought inline with IE-7
