Hello, i forgot the name to this, and i couldnt find it online

Knightmage

Check Mate......unless you are thinking it is  a type of smothered mate but I am not sure it counts as that

iotengo

it's technically not a smothered mate, as the black king would need to be boxed in by his own pieces.

I can post a similar type of mating attack that uses this principle for you. The one i am posting I have heard called the smothered mate but could be mistaken.

Might be Philiodors mate but I thought that was 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bc4 g6 4.Nc3 Bg4 5. Nxe5!! Bxd1?? 6. Bxf7+ Ke7 7. Nd5#. This one may be Legall's Mate but I cannot remember.

Yes, that is a smothered mate, because black's own pieces are the ones blocking the king from moving away.

apteryx

It's Legall's Mate.

And here's Scholar's Mate:

AndyClifton

BaXeD, you can easily change your diagram into a smothered mate solution by placing the black knight on d7. After solving it take a look at the move list in order to see the white answers to other possible black responses:

Of course, then why not just play the mate in 2? (1 Qg8+)

GabrielBedard

I guess it's a lookalike of this one! Except the fact that the queen can't be taken in your situation

AndyClifton

even though it actually should be called Greco's Legacy... Smile

Yeah, that is a good point. Even better is a mate in one: 1. Qd8##.
