That very much depends on the position; sometimes they are better, and other times much worse. eg. In an end-game, B vs N, with (mobile) pawns on both flanks, then the bishop is (generally) better, as it can usually attack and defend both sides of the board more easily -- whilst the converse is true when they are on one flank only; then the ability of the knight to exert influence on both dark and light squares matters more.
