A team of Octopii to predict best chess moves

Sort:

Since the amazing exploits of the Paul the psychic octopus at the world cup I have been inspired to buy a team of 3 octopii to help predict the best moves in my correspondence games.

I am expecting to see my rating go up by at least 500 points.

I can find no specific reference to cephalopodic molluscal assistance in the rules of chess.com.

Would I be correct in surmising that this is therefore legal?

In theory, if I was to remove all logic from my chess game and choose moves completely at random (or with octopi help) I would have a greater likelihood of playing like a GM...

giratina999

what are they called?

franknstein

They are called Rybka, Fritz and Stockfish.

I've wondered about this... it supposedly predicted 7 or 8 world cup finals right?  But that means it's been alive for 32 years... an octopus life span isn't nearly that long though.

Also I found an online news clip saying it was 2 1/2 years old and had predicted 8 finals... what?

It correctly predicted the winner of 7 or 8 straight games at the world cup - all of Germany's, then the remaining games of Spain after Germany got knocked out. As I recall at least.

Oh, ok that makes sense then.

The only problem is that almost every world cup has had psychic animals... Hundreds of zoos had animals that predicted the games in some sort of way. The chances were that at SOME point an animal would choose clams out of boxes in the correct order.

Yes, it also predicted all of Germany's results correctly at Euro 2008 until the final when they lost to Spain, which is the only game it's ever got wrong.

1000 monkeys at a 1000 chessboards would eventually beat Carlsen once

I'm on record as opposed to the use of any form of ESP during games by humans or animals. By the way, conditional moves must require ESP. How else can you make a move in the future in response to a move that hasn't even occurred yet?

Although, it's interesting that well known psychics aren't well known chess players. It would be fun if they at least channeled some of the legendary figures...or moved at least some of their pieces using just their minds...although it might present a problem for the touch rule.

Famously authentic psychic Yuri Geller tried teaching Whacko Jacko the game but gave up in despair.  Whacko couldn't keep his hands off the minors.

Animals predicting the outcome of human contests seems fair since people have been trying to predict the outcome of animal contests for years, e.g. horse racing.

It's now a moot point.  They're all dead.

They didn't like cheesy Wotsits.

i expect they grew weary of being mated all the time by Whacko in the most improbable positions.

They said that 1,000,000 Monkeys could, (given enough time), Write the whole works of William Shakespeare. There is a higher chance of my computer exploding when I reach over 1800 ( Never going to happen)

Charles Darwin said that. And unfortunately for Mr. Darwin he has since been proven wrong by modern Biologists Surprised.  Some British scientists proved that the Chicken MUST come before the egg. Go figure!
