Some of the "Is chess a game or a sport" threads were interesting for a little while. Not very much interesting, though.
And Yet MORE Silly Rules In Chess lol
Extremely difficult to find those whose opinions are not already made up in threads like those.
So, many times I play my usual part:)
On the other side of it, I never knew how exhausting playing an otb tournament can be for a serious player.
I haven't played, but I have observed it close up as my husband has played a bit.
He doesn't eat properly and is stressed out for days. Usually while I have nothing more stressful to do than hang out by the pool (All the tournaments we have gone to so far have been in Las Vegas).
I'll have to play one of these days.
Hmmm, stressed out, not eating properly vs. the pool.
I think my position is obvious.
In all reality, I would like to try it one day, also. Gotta be in the Winter, and in a Northern state, otherwise, I would be unable to focus.
I would add that it might not be as stressful for players like us, cj, since we would not go into one with any expectations.
On the other hand Chess could be turned into a sort I guess. If the game is played on one of those big outdoor boards where the King is nearly the height of an average adult person. The players would carry on until one passed out from the exhaustion of lugging the big Chessmen around ( hey, a game and a workout in one ! lol ).

That sounds like fun!
Actually, we recently played a game of outdoor chess on a fairly large board. The pieces weren't that heavy, though.
I finished one of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books a few days ago, Chessmen of Mars. It featured a sort of gladiator chess called Jetan. Real fighters were the chess pieces, and when one moved to an occupied square, the "pieces" fought to the death for possession of the square.

Yes, I think you are right. I wouldn't be nearly as stressed out simply because I wouldn't have very high expectations.

--- Thanks for the new posts.
On this " Chessmen of Mars " thing it would be hard to play a second game as many of the " Chesspieces " would be dead after the first game ( too wild for me lol ).
No second chances in Jetan. It sounds pretty fearsome.
--- Thanks for the post Corrijean.
On the subject of odd games I would say that chess-boxing fits right into this " silly thread ".
You may not have high expectations going into an OTB tournament, but as soon as you win a game, that whole equation changes!

--- Thanks for the post Javan64. Good point as success is rather like a drug in a way. Somewhat like those poor folks in Vegas who win a bit of money and then just have to keep on playing ( but are blinded to that big reef up ahead ).
Well we have another item that may fit into this thread of silly items. Someone wants to stop people from making " Stupid Threads ". So I gather that this site will now have to hire a " Thead Judge ". I can see it all now: " cabby you are hereby requested to stop creating any more theads about earthworms ( or mechanical chicken-pluckers, or whatever ) by order of this court !!! ". I'm not too sure about this idea lol.
Cabby has a thread about earthworms?
Thanks for the post Javan64. Well no I was just using that as an example, that type of thread would be rather boring. Mind you the earthworms are useful little creatures what wih all of that digging that they do and then again they are still better off than the poor dung-beetles.
Hey I see that the thread to stop stupid threads is now at over 300 posts total, might it be silly or might it be stupid ( people seem to be having fun with it tho ).
It has been sort of fun to follow.
Thanks for the post Corrijean.
In the area of sillyness we now have a thread on the go here about having a deathbed regret for playing too much Chess. I think that many of us would have larger regrets to consider on that fateful day, a few pleasant hours spent playing Chess would be quite low on the list. Not a major concern for most people.
Just wait, cabby. I bet someone does exactly that!
Thanks for the post AlCzervik. You might be right because I've seen some odd posts here at this site lol.
