Chess improvement on 1hr a day

Sort:

For the last few years I've basically had no time / inclination to do much chess study and -- would you believe it? -- I don't seem to have got any better.

But my life circumstances have changed recently and I reckon just at the moment I could easily do an hour's study a day in addition to occasional 'serious' OTB games at my chess club.

So how do I get the best value out of my study time?  Has anybody out there managed to get significantly better without having to put in hours and hours of practise each day? Any great ideas / things to avoid?

I'm rated about 1500-1600 on blitz on this site, probably a bit better than that in 'real life' but my local federation's ratings don't really correspond to ELO ratings so it's a bit hard to say exactly what - probably around 1800.

Hmmm. Interesting idea about setting an actual goal for each study session.

Playing solitaire chess is also helpful.

I agree that chesstempo is great. I wish they had an app.

For part of your training, you should go over a couple of typical games with a friend.  It is hard to see your weakness by yourself.  Have you tried playing vote chess with active players.  I have seen some great moves that I have used in my own games.
