Chess rating system

Ratings can be very deceptive.  For example, when I use to play in OTB tournaments we had notorious "Sandbaggers".  Their rating would drop like a stone to get to a certain number, ie; >1800 so they collect the first prize class prize.  Seemed like a big effort to me, to collect a couple of hundred dollars and of course lose the respect of your peers.

I guess big invitationals ie; World Open suffer from the same problem, where you have GM's playing for the under 1600 prize.

You can't and you won't, unless you are a genius like Carlsen. You best bet is to study Silman's books, practice combinations and be prepared to win, lose and draw games just like e everyone else.

How important is your rating to you?

I've attached too ego/self-worth to my chess.com rating. I need to remind myself that no one cares about my rating, except me and maybe my current opponents. Best just to enjoy the game.

LMAO, GM playing U1600. Such BS.

Please don't believe this tripe. Almost all reasonable chess federations have rating floors that you cannot go below once you establish your rating. I can never play a rated game in a section below 1600 as that is my rating floor. GM's typically must play in the open sections.

A more reasonable "sandbagger" is a player who is on the cusp of a rating category and allows his rating to deteriorate so he can enter a lower category in a big class tourney. But it's hardly a GM playing in the U1600 section.

That's just delusional.

That's not true. I went from the 1500s in the USCF to almost below 1300s (standard rating) and I still don't have a rating floor. I'm gonna see how low my rating can go!

In playing my first game on Chess.com, I received a rating of 1200, before I played. Why, and how was that arrived at?

http://live.chess.com/live?v=2013092501#g=611485187 I got 15 rating for winning a player rated almost 500 points above myself. Is that really ELO rating? Should I not get alot more rating?

AlCzervik

Yes. You should be rated 1999.

Really? Wow, I am a master of blitz.

How do I check my rating here? :/

Ironic I can across this topic.  Just to add something to the mix.  I wonder how many people who play regularly on Chess.com have ratings equivalent or better than their Chess.com ratings?  My Chess.com rating for online chess is WAY better than my current chess club rating.   I tend to play 3 days per move games on Chess.com but typically spend equivament amounts of time considering moves as I do for over the board games.

I appreciate longer games. Btw is it proper to accept a draw if your opponent has you in a continual check or should I just wait them out??????

How is it possible for a player to go from around 1750 to 1100 in apx. two weeks? I just got paired up in "online" with a person that was about 1750 or so and now a couple weeks later.... I would think the numbers wouldn't vary so much so quickly.

GM_Dude_Chess

I don't know, that has happened to me and that is frustrating. The connection does go in and out sometimes and that is a risk that I must take when I start a gameFrown

Check the player's completed games list.  If their rating did in fact drop so precipitously and fast, you may find a slew of losses in a row, possibly timeouts (in the case of a lot of timeouts, the player may have been unable to indicate 'vacation' before being forced to stop play.)

This can happen to players with a large number of games going. Or they can "make it happen;" resign a bunch of games to get an artificially low rating in order to qualify for a particular tournament (example: 1700 'loses' over 200 points to qualify for an under-1500 event). Known as 'sandbagging,' I'd be shocked if such a thing happened here!
