Great, thanks. The point difference at the end of each match is quite small now, possibly a difference of 7 or 8.

7 points is a lot

EggOfSpades

WHY IS THE RUM GONE

7 points is a lot? You play 30 or 45 minutes for 7 points oh god!!! ELO means patience

There is no need for racist or personal attacks on this thread.  If you can't play nice, play quietly.  Thanks

I am new to the game of chess. I'm confused about certain DRAW rules. If both players make the same move 3x consectively, is it a DRAW?

Yes it is if you claim, but you dont have to.

he should have gotten to 2700 using a provisional rating

Is there any way that you can tell what your current k value is, I'm assuming that you'll have a separate k value for each type of chess i.e. live, blitz, etc? Not being the most prolific of players it would be interesting to see how it increased / decreased over time.

Heres how fide works: K val - K is the development coefficient.
K is the development coefficient.
K = 40 for a player new to the rating list until he has completed events with at least 30 games
K = 20 as long as a player's rating remains under 2400.
K = 10 once a player's published rating has reached 2400 and remains at that level subsequently, even if the rating drops below 2400.
K = 40 for all players until their 18th birthday, as long as their rating remains under 2300.

Thanks for the info.  I've just been reading up on the Glicko system used and I should probably have been refering to the ratings deviation rather than the development coefficient.

Wow, I never heard of k value. If dougi is correct, it seems like almost every players number would be 20, so, what's the value?

rtr1129

Isn't there a rule for players who have not played in a very long time? Like if you took 10 years off, does your K value go back up?

SmyslovFan

Do you think in 2000 posts that question may already have been asked and answered?

SmyslovFan

Sorry for the snarky response.

Yes, chess.com uses a system that weights how frequently games are played. It is the key difference between Elo's system and the Glicko system.

The chess rating system it like the tax system. It only benefits the elite. Carlsen (like other super gms) is taking advantage of the k factor so his raring wont drop too 1200. Plus he only plays in invitation only gm tournaments to play other 2700s only....he is avoiding playing at a weekend swiss tournament in your local chess club probably he is scared of losing rating points from a draw or loss to a weaker player.

The tax system is designed to male wealthy to be more wealthier. Likewise dont play chess unless u r good at it. Because everytime u lose your rating goes down and u feel bad. But your rating points trickle up and increase carlsen's rating and he gets a better life. That is why there is rating inflation too.

You actually have a point there, Greenfreeze
