I take the game very seriously here, and did give my 100% a few months back, but for the last few months unfortunately I've just been blitzing in games due to lack of time and energy, which started to tell on my rating too, with a couple of time outs as well.
However, I signed up for the latest official chess com tournament in my rating range and I'll try to give my best there.
Well, when I play vs. stronger players, I give my best, and thats why I win some of those games, but when I play lower rated players, I mess around and lose some of those games, as lower rated players give their best when playing me, and they mess around when playing lower lower rated, and lower lower rated win some games vs lower rated as they give their best...
@philidor_position Well, with your rating in the 2000+ you must be doing it seriously but for me I am in the 1700's so I can't be ...
I tend to try my best in Team games an' muck about a bit in tourneys

I am not serious in all my games, I like to experiment in some of them. What I sometimes do, is to play spontaneous and not analyse the moves too much...this can lead to interesting problems and surprises :-).
I do take my tournament games very serious!

Are you all that serious on every games (on turn-based here) ? Or do you just mess around every now and then or give it seriously when you play against higher rated players ?

When playing you, I would therefore currently apply 1483 / 1706 = 87% effort (although this would potentially vary throughout the game).
I find myself giving 100%, but I often play in situations (late at night, tired, for instance) where I am not at 100% of my game.

No. I reckon that I would only have an 87% chance of beating you if I played at 100%. Subconsciously, therefore, I lower my game to compensate.

The situation is a little more complicated in Vote Chess matches.
My max rating - (hours at work * hours with kid * (hours with wife * 100) /Max rating of my opponent * 100% - number of times I am interrupted before making move.

1950 - (40 * 40 * 80 * 100) / 1950 * 100% - 2 = -13,128%.
Assumes a similar opponent and a reasonable commitment to work, wife and whipper-snappers.
