There are a large number of books geared towards the beginner. If you're looking for one book that covers the basics, you could try Chess for Dummies or The Idiot's Guide to Chess. The reason I recommend these books is because they are written very plainly with clear explanations. Both books cover basic tactics and strategy. Chess Openings for Dummies is a handy book to have because it will introduce opening principles and a variety of different openings to try.

How to Beat Your Dad at Chess is an excellent book that, while designed for kids, introduces the idea of pattern recogniton as a tool in chess. Pattern recognition is something I teach to my chess students because it allows you to recognize specific patterns that appear on the chessboard. When these patterns are discovered you can take advantage of them with tactical devices such as forks, pins, skewers, etc.

The Chess Kids Book of Tactics is a great book for learning tactics and has many excellent exercises as well.

The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings is an old book but explains each move in the opening so you understand how the opening principles work. I would suggest really knowing the opening principles before concentrating on a specific opening.

You can also look into the classics such as My System by Aaron Nimzovich. Most of Bruce Pandolfini's books are good for beginners.

I would suggest starting with simpler books and working your way through to more advanced material. If you are buying the books from a book store, open the book and see if the writing makes sense to you. Some chess books assume the reader has prior knowledge of specific tactical ideas and opening principles. If you don't have knowledge of these topics, the books can be confusing. Many of my beginning students do well with books written for kids (even though they're adults) because the explanations are clear. Let me know if you want a complete list of recommended books in the order you buy them in. Just send me a message. Good luck and make sure to have a board and pieces set up next to you when you read the books so you can play out the moves.
