Has tactics training improved your chess rating?

Over the last one year plus it has helped me see patterns or at least given me ideas. Now if I could calculate on live games betterEmbarassed

No, no it hasn't unfortunately. I've gotten much better at tactics trainer, but it seems I can never get progress from one form of chess to transfer to another.

I can't complain though, especially with how well I've been doing in correspondence lately.

EDIT: To clarify I mean that correspondence, blitz and tactics trainer all progress totally separate from each other, at least for me.

You've hit learning plateau. Now its time to start creating tactics. Instead of. Just recognizlmg them! Difference between acitive and passive play.

that's why your training. Seems. Ineffective you're waiting for blunders

instead forcing your opponent's. Into tactical positions that gains material or

Position

I agree with glsmith good piece placement is key to set up tactics.

if pieces are in optimal positons and you are up a tempo you are more likely to find tactics.

If you believe Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers, it takes about 10 000 hours of practice in order to achieve mastery at the top levels of many different skills.  Although there are other skills in chess other than tactics, considering this figure, those players complaining that say they have spent 30 hours or so and have not seen any improvement are perhaps not being patient enough.  One could spend 30 hours learning to play the piano and make practically no progress at all.  I have spent three hundred hours over the last two years and I have seen progress in my over-the-board play.  My USCF rating has increased from about 1300 to 1500.

Extremely helpful in recognizing patterns during my games.

Tactics training is overrated in my opinion. I use it as a supplement to my game, but making it your overall regiment is not efficient. It's only a small fraction of the game.

KirbyCake

the problem is tactics trainer wants you to mate in 4 instead of 5 when in reality mating faster by 1 move is not going to help in

JonHutch

I agree

Tactics trainer may have some entertainment value but it has no value in improving the game of a player in my opinion.

Sometimes people can get so caught up thinking about positional considerations that they almost develop a blindspot for immediate tactics. And sometimes people are just plain lazy about calculating. Doing tactics exercises is a good way to stay alert to tactical possibilities.

When I started playing chess regularly a month ago, my rating was around 700, so I started doing tatical puzzles aimed for beginners ( https://learn.chessking.com ) and my  rating incrased to around 950, just by aplying some basic tatics I was able to destroy my enemies. a 950 rating is very low, but +250 in one month I thing it's very satisfying.
Appart from ttics I try to play a lot, at least two games a day (15 or 30 min), and I'm tring to learn the first 5 moves for all the main oppening lines.
My goal is to reach a rating of 1400 until the end of the year.

Solving tactic puzzles is so different from actual play, eg i know for a fact that a tactic is available in a puzzle. Perhaps my pattern recognition skills has improved. A better way for me to learn tactics is doing lessons on each tactical theme, like fork, skewer, pin etc, training myself to always keep an eye out for these patterns.

No, but it has decreased my Tactics rating.

I think blunder checking is more of a help in boosting my rating at my level.

I have found the tactics trainer does not improve my chess when it comes to tactics and strategy. However it keeps me sharp and helps my vision. It is the lessons on tactics and checkmate patterns that make me better.

I think of it like in a sport like football doing push-ups all the time won’t make you a better player only learning and refining techniques will. But muscles you gain and maintain with push ups assist you in your growth.

TT is helpful but don’t get caught up in the clock. Just try to solve the puzzle.
