sadly its too late for chess for me, but tennis wouldnt be so bad either but its too late for that as well.

man its like no country for old man, who would have thought, when you are 30 you are too old for anything.

you are only young enough to be mediocre in anything you like to do.

I'm ok like that, other things imply a lot of sacrifice, and then, your life reduces to just one thing

Doggy_Style

I agree, always have a Plan B.

no i think the sacrifice would be easily worth it, you are at least an authority in your field. what beats that??

Because that´s what Human Resources departments think. So, we just have to accept it.

Unless you can work on your own, because in that case you don´t need to care about them.

It's not old per se, it's just too old to become a GM at chess, if you're only a rabbit.

How do you know that being at the very top give you hapiness if you have not been there before? (I´m just assuming that I´m talking to the average man, so my guess is that you are not world class on anything)

TetsuoShima

because success always gives you satisfaction.. and i already made money in several instances where i felt like im the smartest guy on the entire planet (ofc im an idiot but i didnt know that)...

TetsuoShima

just ask any poker player what it feels to be in zone

TetsuoShima

i think even Danny Rensch cant say often enough awesomeness to describe the feeling.

Even though I have not told my parents. My aim in life is to become a great chess player. I don't care what I do for a living as long as I can achieve this aim.

I am 30 years old.

I have two options before me..

1) Return to graduate school in the US(paying my way through it, coz funding is not available) and pursuing research

2) Getting a 9 to 5 job in programming in my own country.

Which one of these two options is likely to give me more room for chess and which is better for chess progress.

Q for High rated players -- What do you do for a living and how do you allocate time for chess.

So you want to discontinue collage to become a great chess player.  For what it's worth, I say stay in collage, earn you degree, and find a great career.  Make chess your passion yes, but don't miss out of your education.  I see why you haven't told your parents yet.

Mandy711

If you can land a 9-5 job with adequate pay, go for it. After 5 and weekends you own the time and can study and play chess.

P.S. Don't be a full time chess professional.

heister

Ok.. I can't believe I have to be the voice of reason here...  ...If you were a good enough decision maker to be a good chess player then you would not have posted this thread.  You're headed in the wrong direction.

P.S.  I agree with Mandy711's P.S.

corrijean

Stay in school. Make sure it is a useful degree.

red-lady

Isn't this a bit of a strange question for a 30 year old man? I haven't told my parents??? Should I start working??? Undecided If you studied until now (let's say 26 years of education...) Why don't you do something with it then?

1900 is not really great. It is perhaps above average, but you could never support yourself with a chess career if your highest rating is 1900. I am not sure why you picked 1900 as a goal. It seems completely arbitrary. Why not 2000 or 1800? What is so special about that rating?

by 'great player' i mean 1900 on standard live.

Let me save a soul here.  Programming, and it's not close.  Graduate school by research is basically legalized slavery.  Your advisor owns your butt, and they can do anything they want to you and the school will back them no matter what.

To paraphrase some guy on the internet somewhere, "you can literally see what 'sunk costs' look like in the eyes of a fifth-year PhD student."  Research can be great if and only if you LOVE your topic AND your advisor.

Also, real talk, saying you want to be a great chess player at 30 isn't much different from saying you want to be a great basketball player, tennis player, or fighter at 30.  It's theoretically possible I suppose, but definitely have a Plan B.

It's possible. Dan Severn started fighting in the UFC in his 30s. Some guy started running marathons in his 30s, etc.
