How to become great chess player?

Sort:

I knew openings, tactics, checkmates etc. But my rating is not increasing above 1250....... sometimes I don't know what to do in middle games and playing awkward a2 or h2 ( in case white) with no reason. I mostly lose in end games ........ I'm struggling to find best moves. Your advices and tips are welcome. I'm playing 15 or 30 mins game and not blitz.

Read- 'my systems' by nimzowitch.

Reading and understanding the book well, will 'atleast' bring you to 1500+

Training with tactics trainer should help.

Majid_Dambad

try chess Mentor (in Learn tab). chess mentor helps u about all things. also test Online chess. in the Online chess you have more time to think and find best move.

at chess.com first games have very much rating (about 150-200). if you lose first games you need to play very much to improve your rating. I suggest you create a new profile and try to win first games Laughing

Surely the first and most important step to becoming a great chess player is to ignore 99.99% of the chess advice on this entire site. We are patzers. We the ignorant ones of chess. We offer advice from a dark, pathetic pool of sloppy, error-ridden games often played under alcoholic influence.

You need to find the 0.001% of advice on this site that is worth anything.

I suggest you buy "Capablanca's Best Chess Endings".   I also agree with Majid_Dambad, start playing the turn-based online games here on chess.com, you can have more time to study your position and try to find the best move.  Even the 15min and 30 min games are still very fast games, either sitting down and playing 3 hour OTB games at tournaments or taking your time playing the turn-based online games will help you improve much faster than any time-control games on this site.

I'm to young to drink, but I frequently play after 3 am and sleep deprivation seems to have the same effect on my playing level Laughing.

The reason your rating isn't going up is because that's the level you're at. Your rating goes up with your knowledge of the game. You just played a game where you lost to someone rated 1186; what rating do you think you should be? There's limitless information online, whether it's on chess.com, some other chess site, youtube, books, whatever. Tactics training is the quickest/easiest way to improve at chess up to 1400-1500 I think. Drill those every day and watch some videos and read some books. Chess.com has a study guide with hundreds of hours of coursework on there, and there's over a thousand great videos on here to learn from if you get a membership. This question has also been asked by every beginner out there, so it's been answered hundreds of times. Improving is the result of studying, analyzing, and playing, so any of those things will help to some degree.

Practice with deep thought! Nothing else is needed.

Join your local chess club. Playing over the board, both friendly games and competitive ones, will keep your interest up and your ability will improve in its own time.

You should concentrate on two things: tactics and endgame.

Analyze your own games.

Well you need to play correspondence chess and analyze every move before doing it and after the game ends.Analyze your own games, give it a deep analysis and little by little you ll understand more.

You can become a great player ONLY IF YOU LOVE CHESS and PUT SOME EFFORT to it.

your comment kavanam is inaccurate.

Tactics & studing GM's game = Perfect recipe for improvement in chess.

So..he repeats the same moto again and again.

Well,he just wants to feel superior because he has reached a somewhat high level. He wants attention and the reputation of a smart man.He is just pittyful...so pity him.Forget about him.I bet that you can reach any level that you want to reach.

alexandros58

I guess they don't put in the effort the right way.Blitz playing won't help them improve.Long long time games will help them by analyzing everything in the potition.

You should also think that they must do something wrong...

But you my friend need to feel superior to them.Well don't fool yourself.

Every brain is designed the same way.Brain is a mucsle..you're using him?You improve him.The difference is that some may need more time, some may need less. But even that(the ability to absorb things)can be trained.
