need app for real time position analysis ie, coaching

Sort:

Hi All,

Any suggestion for an android app that allows me to set up pieces into a position that I want analyzed for next move either white or black without having to go through importing game or going through the entire game to that point, ie, remove pieces place them to the final position I want analysed. I am a beginner with not a lot of time to analyze an entire game but want to use the app to coach me and compare my moves to what the app would do ie real time coaching as I am playing games.

Thank you.

Shredder. It's not free though.I have it on m Android tablet.

Thank you Likhit.  $8 isn't a problem but I've paid for several others that end up not allowing me to create what I call "ad hoc" analysis constructed by placing pieces on the board to create a position that can be analysized and next move for black or white given without going through the whole game.

I've spent too much for what doesn't work for me.

Thank you kindly for your help.

Also, I am being told that Fritz is a good one but there seems to be multiple versions available from many vendors and although the claim is that it is the best chess engine I cant tell if it does what I need it to do.  See above.

I don't know If Fritz is available for android or not but I can assure you that Shredder won't dissapoint you.The engine is quite strong and it's fun to play against too.It changes it's level according to your strength. You can set up positions to analyze too.

Lastly, I saw on a review for Schredder should also get Chessbase and Scid and Droidfish.  Why would I need those?  Someone says it is a mini Chessbase 12 and the images of it look like it does what Schredder does.

I see from one of the Schredder images that it has the "setup position"... sounds like what I need, yes?

Thank you.

I have Chessbase online as well and it's pretty good.It has a huge online database. You don't need it to set up positions though.I don't think it does that.Shredder does it for sure.

Get DroidFish. It's free.

If you have Analyze This app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pereira.analysis then you can choose Position Setup from menu and analyze the position with multiple chess engines.

YourBizzWizz

I got the "Analyze This Pro" version and it also reads Chessbase games. Analyze this is impressive!! Wow.  I also got Chessbase, DroidFish, Stockfish/Chess for All, Schredder and Opennings...

I need all the help I can get.  I went to a club tournament and got beat by a 12 year old girl with 840 rating ;-(

Now I have to learn how to use this Apps, oh boy.

Last 2 questions:

1) what App should I use to create the PGN file so I can do analyzis of tournament writen move notations
2) I saw someone at a game using a device that he used to enter his moves.  Looked like a smartphone but I was told it's the only device aloud to be used while playing in a tournament.  What is it call and where can I get one?

Thank you.

This is commonly termed "cheating."

Phylar

If he uses it in fun OTB games where the opponent is clearly stronger and has given his or her permission to use the app, I see no issue. However, George, there is a very fine line here and you'd do well to be cautious about crossing it.

netzach

Indeed there is and you will not make it beyond 'Rank beginer' (sic) unless you pay attention to the site-rules!

George, do not depend on these apps or gadgets to improve unless your fundamentals are strong.

To improve, follow the basics:

- Solve tactics regularly

- Learn basic endgames and some openings

- Learn proper calculation technique

- Analyze your games with a stronger player

It takes a lot of hardwork and patience. These apps and gadgets are only medium to achieve the above.

Good luck!

If I were cheating or plan to cheat my score wouldn't be where I am and believe me it's not going up any time soon

I want the satisfaction of improving which I have been trying different ways but without success.  What I want to do is think through the problem, make my move and then run an analysis of the position to see what I overlooked, real time as I rarely take time to analyze the game once I am done.

It's absured to cheat, rediculous and can't be satisfying for long and then depressing realizing you are a fool proving nothing to no one.

YourBizzWizz

Asim, what do you mean "Learn proper calculation technique"?

Also, I need an app that allows me to create a pgn file that I can upload and run an analysis of.  I played OTB at a chess club and need to do an analysis.

Any suggestions what app to use for recording notations?

Thank you.

mychessapps

Well, you know as they say, Chess is 99% tactics and then some say Chess is 99% calculation. Turns out both are true!

I like Silman's technique.

http://beginchess.com/2005/03/16/the-silman-thinking-technique/

There are several other methods too (even searching this forum may show up some results of thinking methods that the forum users use)

YourBizzWizz

Mychessapps, so "calculation" is another word for "thinking technique" vs. tactics which are known specific maneuvers like

Discovered Attack
Pin / Skewer
Removing the Guard
Double Attackes / Forks

Silman's book looks good I'll get it but not sure how much I will have time to read.  Better I think to get real time analysis after I make my move.  I also rapidly flip through entire games in Chessbase once a day to get a visual of how pieces get positioned and at the same time see if I can reason out why each piece was moved by rapid visual scanning gives me the fastest insight of how a expert game evolves.

Question:

QUESTION:  I need an app that let's me enter moves from a OTB game and it generates the notations.  Can you or anyone recommend an app?

Thank you.

Again, unless this is an unrated game and the other person is fully aware of what you are doing this is going to be considered cheating.  Positions don't change much after one move.

mychessapps

Well you use a sound "thinking technique" to help in your "calculation". Some times its the tactical and positional factors in the position that sets you in a particular "calculation" direction.

Your habit of flipping through games is good and I believe that is something Mr Silman has suggested here on chess.com.

For your needs, there are PC based software to enter OTB games and then run it to automatically generate annotations (Fritz etc). Don't think current crop of mobile apps do it due to battery issues and time taken to analyze one game.

And pls heed the kind warning by theoretical boy; you should never use engine during a live rated game. Maybe you should try correspondence chess. I play on iccf and shemingmind.com with the intention of improving me calculative skills etc. That way you can make note of all variations you are thinking and analyze it after the game (though I have heard that ICCF players do use Computers while they play!)

So that may work out for you (think through the problem and then analyze it in realtime preferably after you make the move! ;). )
