shredder classic, this engine is good to test strength? better then Fritz 12 that when we play handicap game with the engine programed to play at 1000 ELO its very stong like 2000 ELO player not doing humen mystakes

I agree with Shredder.  I recently purchased Shredder 12 for Linux.  Here is my review:

its possible to play against a 1700 ELO engine for example playing like a humen but not doing a very good master game with blunders making this a stupid simulation?

Yea, Shredder can be "dumbed down" to match any rating :).  Many engines can.

dumbed down? sorry im not english to understand that you mean.

for example, chessmaster can do that but a 1600 personality on that program gives pawns away to be that rating but sometimes find a mate in 6 moves.

more engines do that and i dont like it

ps: chessmaster sucks

rybka is just a engine and chessmaster is a beginners learning game with drills and tutorials. good way to start but not recommended for improvment.

I have yet to see an engine that can realistically impersonate a human player of a certain level. That's why I hate playing against programs that attempt to do that.

I recently got Shredder Classic 4 after using Chessmaster 11 for a couple of months. I find that Shredder plays much more like a human player and doesn't throw in those ridiculous moves every once in awhile like Chessmaster seems to do.

This is just an impression, but I think Chessmaster is the only program that plays such a weird mix of ultrastrong and ultraweak moves.  There are a lot of engines that come much closer to imitating a consistent elo level using their uci_limitstrength and uci_elo parameters: Shredder, Rybka, Sjeng and Hiarcs among the commercial engines, as well as free engines like Homer, Tornado and Ufim.

Dually noted, however I also believe that the chessbase engines play far too strongly and usually don't reflect the weaker level they portray to have. As far as handicaps go Chessmaster does a good job leveling the field.

That behaviour of chessmaster is its worst feature in my opinion. The weird thing is, I thought that people would mention it in the reviews on amazon.com, but it didn't come up once!

Maybe it's just me, but I find Chessmaster just bizarre.  It will hang a piece, and then suddenly turn around, and launch into an ultrasharp ultra-accurate mating attack.  The level fluctuates so wildly from move to move that it isn't really much like playing a human.  It is tactically strong, but strategically weak from the lowest levels all the way up.

If you know how to set the uci_elo parameter, you should be able to dumb down Shredder, Rybka or Hiarcs to more modest levels.  Fritz is actually a complete puppy at lower levels, and Junior, Sjeng and Tornado all can be set to play quite weakly indeed.

Well I suppose our opinions reflect our levels of play- a complete puppy for you is a ferocious monster to me so in a sense we may both be right in our views. Such is the nature of chess- abstract and undefined.
