Token blitz complaint topic!

Ok, so I'm laughing at myself as I write this, but this actually does frustrate me in speed games Laughing

When players (who have basically taken all your pieces) have one queen or one rook, and they take the time to promote a pawn and then do the ladder mate.  I get the feeling some people do it on purpose as an insult.

And it works!  I feel like I just lost to this:

Cute videoLaughing

Yeah, if they're short on time and it's the fastest way I understand.

Oops, that's not a good way to complain... hmm.

I THINK CHESS.COM SHOULD WARN THEM FOR THE FIRST OFFENSE THEN BAN THEM!

Yeah, that's how it goes Tongue Out

I think you're supposed to use the word "troll" in all Chess.com threads, so that you sound like you're talking about somethingWink

If I have knights, bishops and pawns I might have to do a ladder mate...Laughing

It probably takes fewer moves to promote a pawn and do a ladder mate, especially if all you have is 1 rook and pawns.

If I have more than a few seconds then I actually try to look for a fun pattern.  Nothing boring like queen right in front of the king or ladder mate.  Maybe the move that gives mate moves away from the king, maybe all the pieces are on the same color, maybe it's a little triangle or something.

But I guess my opponents would complain I'm trying to tease them.  Nope, just want something a little more interesting (I never slow down, I don't make them wait or anything like that).

Maybe in the title?  "Ladder mate trolls!"

I think the word "troll" is used as a substitute for all thought process in the Chess.com forums.

If you're not agreeing with me then I'm pretty sure you're trolling.

There ya' go! The good part is that it's usually spelled correctlyLaughing

Given your rating one would expect that your opponents will be able to mate with a queen or rook. But (I don't play blitz or bullet) you can also get a stalemate. Using just 2 rooks (or queen(s) + rook) leaves out that possibility. Might be a reason in very fast games just to opt for the simpler option?

maybe a dongle-type gadget in the USB port that you have to stick your finger in while you play, and if you dare to do a ladder mate you get disintegrated on the spot.

Which would be an even faster mate with 4. ... Ka4 5. Qg8. But, that wouldn't be blacks best play.

Or you can try doing this when you are feeling silly like me.

You mean 5.Qd7#, right?

I think I meant 5. Qg10. A move you would probably criticize. Sealed

Wilbert_78

If there was that would be the diagonal for my non-existing checkmate to actually work. I made a stupid error ;)

Wilbert_78

I agree. On the 6th rank they do fine, on the 7th they have to give up a lot of their power, let alone the 8th rank!

The technique for a ladder mate is much simpler so it's a pretty practical (while still quite quick) mate to go for -- just keep moving farther up until you mate. It's also pretty hard to stalemate this way as you're only controlling the files/ranks, usually giving the opposing king plenty of room -- until he gets mated, of course. Even with premoves it should generally be straightforward.

Which is why the kid in the video I posted uses it every time Wink
