Value of the Queen, 9 or 10 points?

Sort:

Hello everybody!

The question is given: The queen's value is 9 or 10 points?
It looks like an amateur question, but...
I began to play chess 8 years ago. And I learnt that, queen is 10 points. But nowadays, I read that it is only 9 points.
Or formerly it was 10 points, but now it is estimated only 9 points?
What is the queen's official value?

I learnt it was 9, in most cases 2 rooks are stronger than one queen.
There are different values to pieces in different situations, and there are even differences in starting values, according to different strong players

Crazychessplaya

It all depends on the position. The pawn is "formally" valued at one point, but when it gets to the seventh rank, it's value increases greatly.

Rasparovov

I've learned 9. But these points are just guide lines.

Well he's asking about the value of the Queen only, not the value of the Queen in certain positions. All I know is it's equal to 9 pawns, since a rook is 5 pawns but 2 rooks are stronger than a solo queen so 9.

EscherehcsE

9, 10, what difference does it make? Smile

Good reading ahead:

So in other words an impossible question Tongue Out

In most books she's given a value of 9, but the numbers are a general guideline for the relative values in most positions.  There is no intrinsic i.e. "real" value for the pieces.  They're always dependant on the specific position.

Is the queen 9 or 10?  She can be 127, it doesn't matter, (of course in that case the pawn would be quite a bit more than 1).  I'd say if you're asking this you're not asking the right kinds of questions.  But if you're just curious what most texts give, most texts give the queen a value of 9 although there are many different systems.

I never heard of a queen being nine until now. I agree though that it doesn't really matter unless you tie in tournaments often.

The queen seems to be the piece where the general values matter least. If you can use her well she's worth your opponents king, in some positions a rook and knight may be worth a lot more.

9 points.

Play the sicilian dragon, and you will shake off the guidelines. All that matters is the kings.

Ok this like what is the value of your gun.

If a burgalar is breaking in downstairs  where the gun is somewhere in box and your upstairs it has no value. If your house under no threat of being robbed than again it has no value.

So a Queen by itself on the board has no value. Follow where i am going with this. The value of it is in what the situation is on the board. 9pts is a guide to help new players and keep them from losing it. So if your being threatened and can use your Queen to defend it has max value. As for attacking the value is priceless if you are about to win the game with it.

Now if you want to reference it compared to other pieces this is a different topic. And one can not just compare it to 2 Rooks. How about A Queen vs 1 Rook and Bishop and Pawn. Or Queen vs Rook and Knight and 2 pawns.... equal?  Or Queen vs Rook and 3 pawns that are in a pawn chain with Rook protecting Root Pawn and King protecting Rook.

Tough or Easy to figure all this out?

Kageri

if you just wanna count the pieces, the queen is 9 points and a rook 4,5

normally the queen is not as strong as 2 rooks or 3 pieces. but in some positions the queen is stronger (for example if the other sides king is exposed you can give checks and win other pieces).

Yussupow (and Lisitsin before him) says in his books that the value of the pieces depends on:

1. central position of the piece

2. safe and well protected position

3. activitiy

4. coordination with your other pieces

5. mobility

How to reduce the value of my opponents Queen can increase the value of your Queen.

there is no other way than to study master games where an imbalance of material occurs, to understand the details that lead to a superiority or inferiority of a Queen. Tal and Keres played many such games.

I could make a long list of indications that favour or do not favour the queen. But such list is always incomplete. The positions with material imbalance are usually very dynamic, therefore everything can depend on one detail , a concrete variant, where some hidden detail would show up.

silviomossa

this is whati heard:

pawn-1 point

knight or bishop-3 points

rook-5 points

queen-9 points

but the value of the pieces change throught the game. your pawn could be worth more than your queen!!!!

AnishBhargava

9 points

This.

With inflation, it may change over the time.

Generally : queen + pawn against two rooks is considered equal.
Obviously, it depends of the position.
