I do a sort of SWOT analysis - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats

My moves are so good that my opponent tends to beat me up after I make the move. Smile

I've had this habit when I do calculations. I started doing it when I was nine. In my head I go:
"If he goes *there*, then I go *there*, then he goes *there* then I go...
Ok, How about  If he goes *there*, then I go *there*, then he goes *there* then I go...
No. Let's try
If he goes *there*, then I go *there*, then he goes *there* then I go..."
I'm 38 now. I sit there for hours and that's the only thing going on in my head the entire time.
People think I'm clever. I'm not.

TOAST, how do you manage that thought process in time control games?

trotters64

Is my opponent threatening any of my pieces ? if so defend them. One way to defend is to counter attack but there has to be a defence to a threat.

If no threat how can I improve my position .?

what weaknesses does he have ? how can i attack any weaknesses ?

Are my pieces active? if not active then ask how to improve them ..find better squares for my pieces.

These are a few important questions to consider in my opinion.

Long_Hair_Dont_Care

How can I put pressure on my opponents position? Are all my pieces doing something? Can I improve any of my pieces? What are my opponents weaknesses and how do I turn them into a bigger problem?

Another one I think a lot is.... how can I exploit this pin?

PLAVIN81

It is properto reflect on the play that your oponent will makeLaughing

This is me too, when I'm actually patient and doing this I play by far my best chess.  There are times I get lazy about the process and it's when I play my worst chess.

Of course, my calculations even in the best of times are way off, but I play much better moves and am much better aware of where everything is going when my mind isn't lazy.
