When to resign?

Ahy, I'm in china right now, so I can't view it. Can you put it in a diagram here for me?

gimme, if you are on a laptop, there are ways to view things there. I can't remember how but I saw a documentary about it quite some time ago, and it showed that it is possible.

Bobby, I've had a couple of those high percentage brews. And, whew!

would like see more examples of GM resigning in a won position 1964. this is entertaining. I guess sometimes being a gentleman comes before being a fighter.

I don't think the grandmaster resigned to be gentlemanly, he resigned becuase he mistakenly thought he had effectively lost.

back to topic ...

... two recent games my opponents resigned because their position were worse than my own. However, if I were in their position I would be tempted to play on cos there happened to be a lot of work still to be done to force a win ... a different situation to having to play perhaps several weeks when the outcome is inevitable!

It's not over til it's over, or you decide you had enough.

I recently had an oppenent resign imediately I forked his king and Queen. I often review my games with Chessmaster, and on review of this one found to my surprise he had overlooked the fact that he could have forced the capture of my queen two moves later! The position was in fact equal.

I also have no problem with anyone playing on in a pawn race for example. It is not until one has played through the moves many times that one can recognise when a position is lost. I think it is good to play to the end regularly.

I think in over the board games people can resign too quickly, but then again there are others who go on to the bitter end for no apparent reason.  I have on occassion got a draw when being a pawn or 2 down, similarly I've drawn games when I've been almost a whole piece up.  Having said that I recently had a game where my opponent refused to resign despite the fact they only had a king left against my king, rook and pawns and I clearly demonstrated I knew how to checkmate with just a king and rook!
