9.d4 is a respectable move, but the main reply is 9… Bg4 immediately. This tends to lead to strategically lighter positions than 9.h3 and so gives white fewer winning chances, at least at the elite level.
Why does white not immediately play 9.d4? I thought the refutation was 9...exd4 10.cxd4 Bg4 where black could take on f3 and if the queen takes there is Nxd4 but if gxf3 white has a weak king. The computer says that it is +1 after this 10...Bg4 though. Any thoughts?
