Which program should be used to open a PGN file?

What the title says!

Always when i download a PGN file, i can't really open it succefully. It shows a box saying that Windows can't open this file. Windows must know which program should open the specified file. Then, there's two options: Use web to find the correct program, or select a program in a list of installed programs(Sorry, as i'm not english, it may contain some errors in comparison to the original).

So, what would be the solution? Download a specific engine to do that?

The PGN files are only text files.

If you only want to see the moves, you can just open them with the notepad or word.

If you want to replay games from databases, you could use this free software (that is very simple to use and include some engines):

A pgn is basically a text file, you can open it with a text editor, like notepad.

Bug then you cant really do anything, except look at it.

You need some sort of interface (GUI) so you can play through your game.

Scid is good, and free.

You might want to add an engine to your GUI, to help analyse your game. Stockfish is a good one, and also free.

Hey, I just saw that you are good player and very experienced, so it´s a bit strange, since you probably have some experience with engines.

KILLBACKFIRST

there is a free program called arena    version 3.5 which allows you to enter a pgn file for analysis etc....

You can link to the game review page for a game but it will run freshly for the viewer and may require an account.
