Yes, there's an event (or two) in the SF Bay Area nearly every weekend. Check out the calendars on Calchess.org. In San Francisco itself, there is the Mechanics Institute Library, which has daily play as well as weekly blitz and monthly standard tournaments. Their website is www.chessclub.org.
Once upon a time, Seattle was the chess mecca of the US. Now, it seems to be St. Louis, or perhaps Austin, Texas.
