Who is the best chess player in the world?

Still, SerbianChessStar's point is well taken. All Carlsen needs to do to prove his greatness now is win the World Championship. Match play really is different from tournament play.

For now, Carlsen is the best tournament player in the world. Until he wins the world championship in a match though, he will not have proven himself the best overall player.

Sensibly, the choice can only be either of Carlsen, Kasparov, Fisher and maybe Murphy. But if the tally is still running I'd still cast a vote for Mir Sultan Khan - guy had a LOT of untapped potential and it is impossible to predict how far he would have gone if he would have been allowed to continue his career.

PresenceOfGreatness

its magnusdrewkasparov !!! he is said to be the best ever !!!! he simply plays all the right moves !!!!

How many of those people are dead?  How many are retired?

The question is Wer ist der beste Schachspieler, not Wer war der beste Schachspieler?

When shatranj came to Europe it was called chess.

Here's what Murray had to say:
"All that the European player received with chess [from the Musilms] was the bare rules of play and a number of End-game positions, problems or exercises with the pieces. The whole development of the game in Europe is European from start to finish...
one of the most striking pieces of evidence for the passage of chess from one people to another has been in the fact that the name of the game was transmitted together with the game itself.  Thus Sanscript chaturanga became the Persian chatranj, and the Persian chatranj became both the Greek zatrukion and the Arabic shatranj.  It is noteworthy that the same thing did not happen when the Arabic shatranj became a European game.   The Spanish ajedrez and the Portuguese xandrez are both descended from the Arabic ash-shatranj. Elsewhere in Europe - and even in the Catalan dialect of North-East Spain - chess received a new name... which was never used in Arabic in the sense of 'the game of chess'"

Catalan is not a dialect, it's a full language spoken by 10 million people aprox., and as ancient as english or spanish.

Sorry, but which part is a misconception? That Catalan is a language not a dialect? That it's spoken by around 10 million people? That it's as ancient as English or Spanish?

I am voting for Kerry Shirts aka as "The Backyard Professor" as the best in the world.  He started his chess career by losing his first couple of games in order to lull his opponents into a false of security.

No, it shouldn't, it should become more slovenly!  It needs to be lived in a bit by this guy:
