What is the purpose of life?  How do you know that regardless of your best concept of what to do and maximum willpower you're capable of exerting, you're still wasting your life?

Mastering something is usually very honorful. Just look at japanese how they master several things, it always enriches life for all others as well...

I rather be master of chess than a jack of all trades.

...one's values determines whether it would be a waste... and their talent may also have something to say about it too

The meaning of life isn't something that should be bestowed upon us.  We are the ones that create meaning and purpose in our lives.  If mastering a board game brings fulfilment and happiness in that regard, who are you to say that it's a 'waste'.
